And lastly, anyone know Dell models inside and out? What models have HDMI? The Inspirons are the only ones I can find that have it (in the outlet anyway). Is that just the selection?

Dell is so outdated with their design. I would be surprised if you found more than a handful of laptops that have HDMI. They only have about 3 laptops that are less then 1.5" "thin" (that is in no way thin IMO). Pudgy laptops, mediocre specs... Dell really needs to step it up.

You call someone a dick and then post this coupon? :p

It is only for laptops purchased through Dell Financial Services. Laptops leased by big corporations and then returned and refurbished. Mostly crap. :(

yes, that appears to be true. I saw some decent deals. Pick one that's like $405. I'm looking for something w/ HDMI though. Just not happening.

I think it is because Dell really caters towards the business crowd. Most of them would want VGA output for all their legacy projectors. Both places I've worked at in the past 5 years were like that. Many of the Dell consumer products have a business variant because platform sharing cuts costs due to economies of scale.

I've now used my Latitude 13 for a while. Looks like 4 hour battery life may be a reality. Claimed just over 4 hours with around 93% battery while idling, and after an hour of light web browsing it still claimed around 2:57 left. I set battery screen brightness to 5/15 in BIOS. The Windows 7 Pro install is really clean. The bundled anti virus had a pop-up which required registration or uninstallation, so I choose the latter. Everything else pre-installed is mostly typical stuff such as drivers, system utilities and some plug-ins. I see Windows Live stuff, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (???), Adobe Flash Player 10, Java 6 Update 20, Microsoft Silverlight, PowerDVD. Not too bad on the bloat.

Same resolution but bigger screen than the 12.1" Hannspree means everything was easy on the eyes. Touchpad really does work as well as it looks, with plenty of room and a very slight texture.

Notebook barely gets warm and is really quiet. The Hannspree is kind of noisy in comparison. However, jury is still out as I have yet to stress it. Hmmm, just noticed that there is a "System cooling policy" in Power Options, with "On battery: Passive." Maybe that's why it is so quiet? Still, if it stays this cool, then why spin the fan? It ships pre-set to "Dell" for Power Options. It doesn't seem to ever go into true sleep mode on its own. Strange...

One thing that kind of bothers me are the corners of the unit. Since it is somewhat small, I always find myself resting my palms on the corners of the wrist rest area, which are squared off. It isn't exactly sharp, but not exactly comfortable either. Guess I've become used to all my other consumer level notebooks having rounded front corners.

I think I can come to like this unit. I'll play around with it a few more days and if all is good, I'll upgrade to 4GB RAM (single slot only) and an SSD. Crap! Just noticed they shipped it with 32-bit Windows 7 Pro since it only came with 2GB RAM. Seriously, why not ship everything with 64-bit Windows 7 these days? Well, everything except Windows 7 Starter, which will report full amount of RAM, but in parenthesis say (2.00GB usable).

Double extra bonus: Wife was like "wow" when she first saw it. Uh, wait, that came out wrong!

I picked up an m11x and received it yesterday. It seems great so far for what I needed, and I'm very pleased. However, the frost left part of the bezel by the light was cracked and moved out of position. I've been able to get it back how it should be more or less, but the light on that side is still very dim and light also leaks through a gap in the bezel now. Are things like this normal with a refurb, or should I see about a return and try another one? Either way, it's a minor issue and I could live with if it I have to, but I'm curious if this is worthy of a replacement. Had I bought the laptop new I would definitely be returning it, but I'm not sure if this is just normal for a refurbished machine.

Contact Dell support and report the damage. That is not acceptable for an outlet system. They may want to send a repair tech out to replace the neccessary component(s) or they may offer to send you a new or refurb system as a complete replacement. Or you could just tell them you want to return it due to the damage and look for another one yourself. I would request a replacement if they try the repair option.

I had something similar happen to me a few years ago. Ordered a Latittude D400 from outlet and the palm rest area around the mouse pad was raised significantly because they did not install it properly. They wanted to send a tech to repair it but I was concerned the the palm rest would be warped if they just took it apart and put it back together so I pushed for a complete replacement. They denied it at first but after escalating to a customer care person they decided to send me a new system since they did not have a refurb wth those specs in inventory. It was a pain to deal with but I was satisfied with the resolution. Their process may have changed so YMMV.

I ordered a 570 refurb desktop for a friend last week and it had a noticable dent on top of the metal case. I reported it as damaged to Dell support since it was not classified as scratch & dent. I'm waiting for their response.

I bit the bullet and ordered a M17x for around $2400.

QX9300, SLI 280, 8Gig (1333), 500Gig Raid0 SSD, WUXGA, 9 cell, BD/DVD-RW drive

Was about $700 more than the first I was going to order,

QX9300, SLI 260, 4Gig (1066), 250Gig HD, WUXGA, 9 cell, DVD-RW

What do you guys think? Figure the SSD and 4Gig of memory would cost more than $700 so I bit :)

That is an insane laptop. I can't see how anyone wouldn't love something like that.

I grabbed a 128 gig SSD from Crucial to put in my L13. Looking forward to some awesome boot times.

I finally broke down and got an m11x. I was originally holding out for an R2, but after reading some comparison reviews, the jump in price didn't seem worth it.

Dual Core, 4GB Ram, 320GB hard drive, everything else standard 615 shipped.

That sounds pretty spankin'! You can upgrade the SSDs and the RAM, but very likely you can't upgrade the graphics cards cheaply or easily (have to order as Dell replacement parts).

I have a similar DTR, a Clevo M980NU. It also has a QX9300, SLI 280M, 8GB RAM. Only one 256GB SSD though, but two 500GB data drives. BFBC2 plays pretty smooth at 1080p.

Maybe Dell uses lower mAh batteries?

I have just verified this to be true.

I was reading Anandtech's review of the Adamo, and it mentioned the review unit coming with a 1.8" SSD and 40Wh battery. Uh oh, did my Latitude 13 come with a 1.8" drive too? Decided to take it apart since I already have an SSD for it, and it uses a 2.5" drive. Battery is 30Wh. Looks like the Adamo gets better battery life at the expense of a physically smaller drive bay. As it is, the 30Wh battery physically takes up about 1/3 of the entire chassis, the mobo takes up 1/3 and the rest of the components takes up the remainder.

I think 4 hours is pretty good battery life for a 30Wh battery.

Incidentally, one of the screws had a stripped screw head, and one of the holes was stripped. However, the stripped screw was not in the stripped hole. :hmm: I just used the good screw in the good hole and left out the stripped screw and have no screw in the stripped hole.

I got a mini 10 1012 S&D but i might consider returning it to get the model with broadcom hd crystal card and 13xx X 6xx resolution.. Do they ever have that with the 160gb model? I've only seen the 250gb model which ends up being like $285 after coupon (expiring today).

The cheapest S&D with a 1366 screen I was able to find was ~$245 with tax. I think they only sold that model with the 250gb drive.

The coupons expired last Friday, but there should be another round any day now. I would like to get a 1012 with 1366 and WiMax, but I have never seen one with the internal wimax card and that resolution.

This is back up to 15%. I just picked up an Inspiron 15R w/ 3 gig memory, 320 Gig HD, and HDMI port - $344 Shipped AC/AT. Just kind of got lucky and stumbled upon it though. Not too much you are getting below $400 currently.
