And lastly, anyone know Dell models inside and out? What models have HDMI? The Inspirons are the only ones I can find that have it (in the outlet anyway). Is that just the selection?
I think it is because Dell really caters towards the business crowd. Most of them would want VGA output for all their legacy projectors. Both places I've worked at in the past 5 years were like that. Many of the Dell consumer products have a business variant because platform sharing cuts costs due to economies of scale.
I've now used my Latitude 13 for a while. Looks like 4 hour battery life may be a reality. Claimed just over 4 hours with around 93% battery while idling, and after an hour of light web browsing it still claimed around 2:57 left. I set battery screen brightness to 5/15 in BIOS. The Windows 7 Pro install is really clean. The bundled anti virus had a pop-up which required registration or uninstallation, so I choose the latter.

Everything else pre-installed is mostly typical stuff such as drivers, system utilities and some plug-ins. I see Windows Live stuff, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (???), Adobe Flash Player 10, Java 6 Update 20, Microsoft Silverlight, PowerDVD. Not too bad on the bloat.
Same resolution but bigger screen than the 12.1" Hannspree means everything was easy on the eyes. Touchpad really does work as well as it looks, with plenty of room and a very slight texture.
Notebook barely gets warm and is really quiet. The Hannspree is kind of noisy in comparison. However, jury is still out as I have yet to stress it. Hmmm, just noticed that there is a "System cooling policy" in Power Options, with "On battery: Passive." Maybe that's why it is so quiet? Still, if it stays this cool, then why spin the fan? It ships pre-set to "Dell" for Power Options. It doesn't seem to ever go into true sleep mode on its own. Strange...
One thing that kind of bothers me are the corners of the unit. Since it is somewhat small, I always find myself resting my palms on the corners of the wrist rest area, which are squared off. It isn't exactly sharp, but not exactly comfortable either. Guess I've become used to all my other consumer level notebooks having rounded front corners.
I think I can come to like this unit. I'll play around with it a few more days and if all is good, I'll upgrade to 4GB RAM (single slot only) and an SSD. Crap! Just noticed they shipped it with 32-bit Windows 7 Pro since it only came with 2GB RAM. Seriously, why not ship everything with 64-bit Windows 7 these days? Well, everything except Windows 7 Starter, which will report full amount of RAM, but in parenthesis say (2.00GB usable).
Double extra bonus: Wife was like "wow" when she first saw it. Uh, wait, that came out wrong!
