So, it can be used as a stand alone mp3 player?

I wonder if it's as simple as dragging and dropping onto the compact flash card?

I'm thinking the Small business one is also $349, but some of you have it not to include the USB Cradle which where you might be thinking it's $20 Cheaper.

You should be able to use it as a mp3 player just fine... Windows CE has been able to do that for a while. My iPaq 3135 (monochrome screen) plays them just fine in WMP from a CF card. If I ever do get another handheld..I hope it has CF slots....since it's what I use in my digital camera as well...(same goes for camera...I dunno if I'll be that lucky getting a better camera that uses CF.)

My guess is the SB one is cheaper because, for me for instance, by the time i was done with tax and shipping (which I don't get charged either at the dell home site), its $356

Wow ! If I didn't have my iPaq, I would be all after these !

They have taken some design from Philips Nino (it's no longer manufactured since 2000), and it would be much more sturdier than iPaqs, looking at the rubber trimmings on the sides (ala Phlips Nino)

I would say go for it guys.

It is sure to give a run for money for iPaqs etc !

I Love Dell !

Is the audio better than the ipaq? I have a 3765 Ipaq and I'm thinking of getting a new PPC. The 3765 is good and all but battery sucks, among other things. But one thing I love about it is that it's audio is top-notch. I haven't heard anything better on any other PPC. Am I wrong?

I wonder if they ever make these with a 1.8" hard drive like what the Ipod uses. Imagine having 20 gigs of mp3s and movies in your hand. Even if these models would cost more you would not have to buy any memory cards. Maybe the batteries are not up for it yet.

Yup ... If you have a CF Reader all you do is drop and drag your mp3's

Netgear MA701 802.11b Wireless Compact Flash Card
Staples has it for $120. staples
PM 110% to buy.com @ $77.16 w/ free shipping
$120 - ($120-$77.16)*1.1= $72.87
Add ~$28 worth of stuff (maybe CD-Rs that are on rebate) that you may need and use a $30 off $100 code. (find it somewhere like obese wallet)
There is a $15 MIR. rebate
In the end, you get it for $72.87-$30-$15= $27.87

You can use this on your laptop, too. It's not officially supported by Netgear, but it does work. They use the same chipset as many other wireless card manufacturers. You need a PCMCIA-CompactFlash adapter. Also, you would need to download the proper drivers. I forget where they are.

This is the PDA I've been waiting for CF, SD slot, transrelective display, removable battery, etc. etc. Hopefully, a decent discount will come out around Christmas.

Yes....

I just bit, had a $30 off $300 coupon in the last Dell Home catalog they sent me, so I bought the X5 400. I have to have a cradle for my PDA's too, so the more expensive one was an easy pick...

had to wait for CSR to get approval for the coupon's use & I had to pay tax. Off to Staples for the CF 802.11b card now...

For those of you who want maximun storage for mp3's consider the CF PC Card Adapter here. I use it with my Maestro (staples deal) and it works great. The dual slots are very convienient since I use my netgear wifi a lot around the house and still have a sd card with plenty of apps to use. Of course the Maestro suffered from horrible battery life (lessened by using the battery extender found at the link above), so if the Dell can improve on that and not appear TOO bulky, this just may be the best deal going.

I would second that. I believe that battery is able to support this kind of setup. Even if the hard drive is reduced in physical size and capacity to 5 GB, smaller drive that current one. I would think that its still going to be the most versatile PDA ever. Watch movie, listen music, read email while you are sky diving. Now that will sound really good. Hey you can even take a video clip of yourself sky diving with say a compact flash camera...is there such a innovative piece of technology?

And if the thing cost 499 it will still be better then an axim at 299 base price and no major storage space. The line with PDA/multipurpose PDA/ laptop/Mp3 player/camera/pocket PC is really becoming meshed into one fine piece of technology. Untill then, I am happy with a laptop.(not that I am happy now)

It'll be awhile before I can get it, so I'll just answer some of the questions posed.

All Pocket PC 2002 PDAs have interoperable software now, since Microsoft declared manufactures had to use ARM compatable processors (instead of a choice of three in Pocket PC 2000). So, HP I-Paq software will work on this (with a few exceptions of apps that use low-level features of the I-Paq). Also, any previous WinCE/Pocket PC 2000 apps for ARM or StrongARM should also work.

Of course it will play MP3s, and WMAs, drag and drop using the included software. Divx (have to re-encode it to smaller size), and MPEG video files can be played with third party software (full color and sound, most players let you play the movie full screen[sideways]).

Storage hungry? Plug a 1 or 2GB microdrive into the Type II CF slot for your video and music needs, or if you really need space get the adapter Dotman mentioned, and use it with a portable harddrive kit. (Needs to be PC Card/PCMCIA and fully ATAPI compatable. Cardbus and drives requireing special drivers can't be used)

Battery life? Not sure, Intel says X-Scale should be less power hungry than the StongARM, but I guess looking at reviews would tell you that stuff, and of course varies on what apps you use and what the backlight is set too.

Want more reasons to get one? How about a built-in internet browser (PIE) that, using separate compact flash modem,Compact Flash NIC or cell phone (blue tooth w/CF adapter or IR), lets you surf the 'net on your palmtop (not just WAP, but full fledged internet, you can even get Flash plugins). Very cool!

Dotman: Do you know if that adapter can fold all the way back, letting you put the PCCard behind the PDA? I know it says flexible, but I'm wondering how flexible.

Got the same e-mail. If I hadn't recently bought an Insipron 8200, I'd pick one of these up.

*sigh* unbelievable after I spend thousands at Dell I do not get the 10% promo!
I'm speechless!

Maybe it's a standard promo code?
Can you both post say the first half of the number so we see if they differ?

What else can I do? Because I want to order the Axim X5 and Insipron 8200 (or Inspiron 2650)

I appreciate any help!
Or if someone will not be using their 10% code *please* private msg me it, I will be much grateful!

I got the emailed coupon, and I also got a coupon for $30 off $300 from a catalog good for S&P. The Axim is in the "Products" section of the S&P, but it won't let me use the $30 coupon on it...the details of why it can't be applied say the coupon can't be used on a "system." :|

I'm gonna call tomorrow and try to get them to take the 10% & $30 off. $349-10%-$30-$50 = ~$234. Seems like a pretty good deal if it works and I can get it shipped free with no tax. :)

for those wondering about the small form factor pc.... presenting the oqo
It's not out yet and in fact it's past due I think. It's slated to cost just under 1000. looks like a great device on paper, but not sure how good it will be especially windows xp on an 800x600 screen! Still i'm hoping this formfactor will pick up and be somewhat mature by the time I enter grad school then i'll be able to afford to pick one up. =)
