I am going to be getting a laptop soon and do not want to spend that much on it. Of course, that scenario takes me to Dell. A friend of mine tells me they make crap and I will be wasting my money.

Is that true?

Mine wasn't bad...I just wanted something better. I sold the only Dell laptop I kept shortly after I purchased it from Dell.

What does your friend suggest?

We used to purchase Dell laptops at my company (~450 laptops). The quality has gone downhill horribly compared to 4 years ago. We have switched to HP now and they seem to be much better than Dell in terms of quality. My advise would be to purchase an HP.

dell desktops for me have always been rock solid, i never owned a dell laptop but my g/f and her entire family have them and every single one of them break down within the 1st month (i'm talking serious issues including send it back and sometimes replacement). That's my 2 cents

My dell work laptop works pretty well. It's a precision M90, core 2 duo. I had an HP NC6000 at my previous job and it was a good laptop also.

Can you be a little more specific with your budget?

Dell Inspiron 6400 for $699 with no rebates and free ground shipping:

Intel Core Duo T2250 (1.73GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA Display with TrueLife [free upgrade]
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
160GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
Integrated Audio
Media Direct 3.0
53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Technically Apple and Lenovo make better laptops but they cost more.

I would also check out the Dell Latitude series which has a better build quality than the Inspiron.

Dell support is atrocious.

Their laptops are pretty good bang for the buck. They are designed like Fisher Price toys in terms of durability and looks, which in my opinion, is a good thing. They are rugged.

I would prefer 1GB RAM for $599 but it's a good deal if you're a non-gamer.

I may be on my own on this one, but I love the IBM laptops. . .although you'll be dishing out extra dough, I think they are well worth it (from the ones I have worked on). But dell would definitely be my 2nd choice.

I've heard of a ton of problems with dell laptops... My friend got his and not even 2 weeks after his drive would not read CDs, only DVDs. How bizarre is that

Anecdotal evidence is the best benchmark of brand reliability.

I have a Dell Latitude D600 which hasn't had a problem in the 2-3 years I've had it (the Dell battery was replaced during the callback though). I use it on a daily basis and have brought it abroad, but it stays docked on my desk for most of the times.

I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 which definitely feels more solid than the Dell, but I've yet to see anything in the Dell that may take it out of service.

You wouldn't be able to game anyways becuase of the intel 950 graphics.

As for me, the dell laptop Inspiron 5100 I bought a few years back sucked balls. Not so great build quality and had a serious overheating design flaw known to Dell that they never addressed.

When I need a laptop I'll build my own from a Compal.
