My neighbor has a Dell Latitude PP015, not sure the exact MHZ but it's P3/256megs. It came with an external DVD drive. DVD playback is choppy. I guessing it's because the video in the system sucks, but why would dell ship it with a DVD drive then? Is the interface on an external notebook DVD drives even fast enough to stream the movie correctly?

Are you using a USB Connection? I doubt USB 1.1 could handle a DVD Movie

No, it's that uhh whatever the notebook connection is, looks like Serial. What you said is what I'm thinking the problem is. But I don't see why they would ship the notebook with an external drive that can't support proper DVD playback. It's not so bad you can't watch the movie, but it is noticeable.

DOH! I can just run DVDspeed on his system and see what kind of xfer rates he is can get, then I'd know if it was a CPU/Video problem.

You may need to update any drivers as well. Post back and let us know the transfer speeds you are getting.

I ran DVDSpeed, didn't let it finish, but it started about 1.6x and was up to 2.2x by the time I stoped it (maybe 10% of a DVD) I was pretty shocked. I figured the connection was just like a Serial but for a notebook.

Put PowerDVD on there for him and it worked beautifully.
