I say that having easily spent $10,000, maybe $20,000 on computer gear over the last 15 years. I still have the $600 "photo printer" I bought in 1995, and just threw away the $400 486dx2/66 chip I bought in ... 93? something like that. (for the last 10 years it has been floating around my desk drawer)
Boy were those some "winner" purchases. The printer was a POS from the day I got it... the CPU obviously I kept for about 9 months before it was completely obsolete. Just the other day I ran across a receipt for $350 for a 20 gig hard drive.
$500 will buy you a very usable desktop.
$1000 will buy you a very usable laptop.
Either one will be worth HALF of that in 2 years and will be dramatically eclipsed by whatever is new at that point in time.
Spend the $1000 now, and two-three years from now spend another $1000. Overall, you will have done much better for yourself.
PS: For the record, I've started buying a new PC every 2 years, I'll get whatever magic deal $350-500 will buy me at Dell, which a year ago was a P4 1.8, and in another year will probably be a 3.5 ghz system - I'll never need to upgrade anything, and I'll rarely need to worry about components failing. Upgrades I can sneak in as I see fit, but so far the only thing I've done to my latest system was add a DVD-burner. I don't play any hardcore games on my PC, so for the $ I just can't go wrong this way.
PPS: I could totally afford a $2000 computer - but I've learned to realize that that $2000 could be spent a lot better in a lot of other ways.
I appreciate the info. I am looking at getting a quality high speed laptop though. This one should last me for quite some time, and since it uses desktop chips, I can always pop a p4 in it in a couple of years to keep it up to par with speed. I appreciate everyones opinion in this thread, but I am ready to ditch my 400mhz lappy and get a quality one.
