I don't know how it could "only" work with Media Center...

Looks the the normal works with several packages other than MCE rig. No tax but $8 shipping to Cal.

From the picture I could not see if this is the old or current remote.

This is the standard MCE remote. The reason it only works with MCE is because the buttons on it are specific to the interface of MCE and only MCE uses that particular IR-blaster. See that IR cable it comes with. That's to change channels on your set-top box.

It is great price for this remote, as it runs $40-50 sometimes. You pretty need it if you want to use MCE as a PVR. That remote has buttons that are interperted strange in other programs, like ITunes. If you just need a remote for any general purpose, consider a Remote Wonder from ATI instead.

I believe this remote will work with Xbox 360 as well. You use just the remote. You do not need the IR sensor.

Any remotes out there other than this one that I can use to control my XP Pro(not MCE) computer to play the music(MP3's) on it? It's not being used as a PVR. I just want it to be able to play music and maybe show pictures with the remote. Other wise, I don't know what to use to control and use the media files on the computer.

Hot deal - this remote will work out of the box with XP Pro and the buttons work like a multimedia keyboard so should work in itunes/WMP etc. You can also use girder or HiP to get it to control practically any program out there, including using the IR blaster.

The pic looks like this is the slighly older model which isn't able to learn commands to power a TV, but for $15 is a great deal.

edit: The remote can work with XP home, but you need a driver file for it from XP Pro or MCE.

Shipping's steep. $8.84 USPS Priority or $10.10 FedEx Ground to Ohio. Still a good deal, but cold enough that I'm going to pass. To bad too, I love the MCE remotes.

Snapstream makes a remote that works, I use an Ati remote, and plan to play with an old Palm running Novii. Lots of choices.

Good deal, I'm kinda mad, I just bought one a month ago for $40

You do NOT need XP MCE to get it to work, as long as you have Pro. I have never tried Home.

If you don't have Media Center, you can use the freeware open source alternitive called Media Portal.

It works OOTB with the remote, and I like it better than any other remote I have owned.

I bit and added a second bare remote to my order this morning . They were selling for $5.50 earlier today when I ordered. Now they are priced at $7.99 for the new. They have used for $5.99. Pics look slightly different then the one bundled with the reciever. We'll see what shows up. It only added like a buck fifty the the shipping. Two media center remotes with one reciever for ,$30 shipped. Thanks DurocShark.

when you guys get these in your greedy little hands, post back and let us know how things went with your purchase. 🙂

Exactly. So there are problems with ITunes. I can't remember off the top of my head, but there are buttons in which illogical things happen. The problem is that I don't know of a way to remap the remote to do different things. That's why I recommend the ATI Remote Wonder. That has a big fan base of people making plug-ins so it works corrrectly with everything. The ATI remove even has its own scripting language for it called... ACE... or something like that.

Today, the 4th, you get a free breathalyser/timer/flashlight with any purchase.
