Are you serious? over 80% better??

Yeah.

The 6800Go is about equivalent to a 6600GT, and the Go6800 Ultra is about equivalent to a 6800GT/6800Ultra

Um, The 6800Ultra is less I think. It only has 12 pipes.

Linky from Anandtech!

I did my research before buying my m170 with a 6800Go Ultra, so I've read a LOT about this gpu. With "only" 12 pipes you would initially think performance would be lower than 6800GT/Ultra, but the default speeds are 450mhz/1.06ghz! This is much faster than a GT and also faster than the ultra. Benchmarks are very close for all 3 cards.

FWIW, these are the games I currently run on my lappy:

Call of Duty/COD United Offensive (No COD2 yet, but I'll buy it this week!)
Far Cry
Half Life 2
Half Life 2 Lost Coast
Doom 3
Quake 4
Other older ones

I run all games at 1920x1200, or 1600x1200 for those games not supporting wide screen, with 8-16af; in-game settings maxed out. I don't use AA much at all. I've not benchmarked my machine, but I can say all games run very smooth and are beautiful to look at (especially Far Cry @ 1920/1200). Am using Forceware 82.10.

Best of all, I picked up the laptop through AAFES last month for $1499 total price! They ran some special prices for like 2 weeks before I finally caved in and bought - the price made it to good to pass up!

You will regret buying the 6800go if you want to play the newest games.

Surely Backinthe days has "personal" first hand experience with the 9300 and a go6800 graphics adapter..or he would not have made that statement...or would he have. Under the "remote" possibility that his statement was made based upon hear-say and not first hand experience...I myself as a owner of a 9300 with a go6800 graphics adapter can attest to the fact that it has played everything I have thrown at it. On occassions I have had to tweek settings a bit to optimize its performance but I have had nothing close to unplayable. Perhaps what really needs to be understood is that we "are" talking about a laptop PC and not a desktop PC. Try as they may laptops usually struggle to keep up with there big brother desktop systems. I do not "regret" my purchase...thankfully I was able to make my decsion without an input from someone that may not even own the device in question. You should not read into this though that I am infering that the go6800 is equal to the 6800 ultra..it is not...but getting the 6800 ultra in the XPS comes at a price and a very stiff one at that. You should weight the benifits of the performance gain carefully.

Thank you for the reply, that was part of my "hmm" response at the other poster...

I'm trying to weigh the differences and I really probably shouldnt spend $1000 more just for a better video card in a laptop..

but if they ever come out for another XPS coupon it would be worth a few hundred more to me...

I have the Go6800 (non-Ultra) in my Dell i9300, and I do have to say, that with a bit of overclocking, the Go6800 can hold it's own. At it's stock speeds of 290\295(590), it's kinda slow. BUT, I've overclocked mine to 360\360(720), and it runs just great, with 3DMark05, I get around 4200 Marks. I have pushed mine up to 390\370(740), but at those speeds, it gets a bit warm, so I backed them off a bit, and they're fine. I'm sure by applying some AS5, I could perhaps squeeze a bit more out of it... ;)

Is it hard to disassemble and work with the HSF on the vid card such as that?

Ditto for me. I have mine at 375/740 and get around 4200-4300 Marks. The one thing the Go6800 has over the Ultra is you can overclock it real easy.

The word is *warranty and who really knows if it does because dell does have guides on opening and installing components in their desktops and laptops.

The 6800 go ultra and 7800 GTX go can go into a 9300 fairly easily. You need an xps power brick and a 9-cell battery but its fine other than that. You may need the northbridge heatsink from an xps (reccomended). But when the next generation of go gfx comes out with lower temps and lower power requirements, i9300 and xps m170 will both take them. Its temps and power, but mostly power...

Andrew, I sure hope that does come true and Dell will extend upgradability downward to last years' models. But history tells us different. Dell dramatically changes its laptop lines about every 2 years. Since the m170 (and 9300) are entering their second year this doesn't bode well for us to change graphics adapters. Sure, we'll still be able to buy a 7800GTX for awhile (going price is $599 though), but new laptops to come will probably use different graphics modules.

This has happened several times in the past. 8100 & 8200 maxed out with Radeon 9000 cards; 8300 came out with 4200 Go - but it was NO GO putting one of these in my old 8200 (with 440MX Go) because the module was changed slightly and wouldn't fit without major structural changes in the 8200.

This policy helps Dell (and other vendors) sell new laptops!!!

sorry dude you are terrible wrong...im having a inspiron 9300 with go6800 standard card, is scores on default settings about 4000 3dmarks 05, and 8500 3dmarks03, when tweaked which they all can be with rivatuner i get 375 mhz core and 800 mhz mem, that gives me 4819 3dmarks05 and 10600 3dmarks03.

thats only 14% slower than with go6800ultra

merry christmas

and further more we are four gamers that all bought a inspiron9300 with the go6800 standard, all of us can do approx. 375-400 on core and 800-825 on mem.
