If I need to take it on the road, I have a power inverter if I need to charge the battery.

I got around 2.5 hours from the battery Playing games, listening to mp3's through an external drive powered off of the usb port and watching a video picture disk.

I think that's pretty good concidering the laptop has a 17" screen and a GB of ram and a 60GB 72K HD
to power. Not to mention a Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB video card.

I am more than happy with my beast.

The hard drive isn't a big power drain.

I can see you don't like the 9200...That's nice for you ..

Don66, a reading comprehension course may be in order for you, with maybe a logic refresher course after. I didn't say anything about liking or not liking the 9200. You show your ignorance by saying that the battery life is good "concidering (sic) the laptop has... a GB of RAM and a 60GB 72K HD to power", as if either of those makes a big difference. The Hitachi 72k disk actually has lower power consumption than most 5400 RPM drives.

wow feel the love

Your posts are all very negative regarding dell based on your past experiences. I assumed you hated the 9200 too, but reading you posts the only thing you say negative about the dell 9200 is you recommended clients away from it based on bad info on the dell web site.

I hate it when someone edits an original quote to make it say what they want.

Don's original quote was:
" has a 17" screen and a GB of ram and a 60GB 72K HD
to power. Not to mention a Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB video card. "

Don is right, A huge screen, large fast (for laptop) hard drive and radeon 9700 are all power guzzlers vs. the integrated graphics and smaller screens and hard drives found on other laptops.

Score one for Don66

In other news

CNET finally posted a veview of the 9200. While they liked the laptop they state CNET is no longer doing battery tests, then go on to report the result of their battery test, the 9200 lasted 163 minutes for watching a movie on the 9200. That's with the large battery, and it is a lot less than PCMAG is reporting for time with the large battery:

http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_I...734.html?tag=pdtl-list

ref (hd specs including power)

40gb 4,200 rpm specs
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/c4k40/c4k40.htm
60gb 7,200 rpm specs
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k60/7k60.htm

Hate it all you want. The only thing I was excluding was mention of the 17" screen, since I would never deny that that's a huge power drain on the laptop. Also, I didn't make it "say what I want", I edited out part of it; I emended it. They actually teach that sort of thing in journalism school, believe it or not. I did not change the meaning of Don66's statement; he was saying, in part, that a gig of RAM and his drive are notable power guzzlers, when they're not.

I notice that you didn't post the specs for the 5K80 drive; I didn't compare the power consumption of the 7200 RPM drive to a 4200 (in which case the power difference is still not a huge deal), but to a 5400 RPM drive. Nobody interested in performance would buy a 4200 RPM drive; those are solely for the budget-minded and people who need every minute of battery life they can get.

A large fast hard drive is not a power guzzler. Even the difference between the wimpy 4200 RPM drive you posted and the Travelstar 7K60 is around a watt or less for normal use, not idle. If you had been interested in fairness, you would've compared it to this drive:

Hitachi Travelstar 5K80

Isn't that amazing, now? Keep in mind also that some 4200-RPM drives one rev back have higher consumption than the 7K60.

Now I'm left wondering about the actual battery performance of this laptop. The 5 hour figure may be with the larger battery, the screen dimmed all the way, at idle. I'd bet that with the 6-cell laptop Don66 was not solidly gaming etc.

Lighten up!
I was only giving an opinion.
Do you own a 9200?
If not STFU!
No one asked for your opinion and if I need another asshole I'll be sure to look for you.

You gave an opinion informed by ignorance. Nope, I don't own one. Shut the f*ck up yourself if you can't handle the truth, dumbass.

So if you need another asshole besides, um, me you'll be sure to look for me?!? That's the logic I'll expect from you in the future. Enjoy your 2.5 hour battery life.

I will enjoy my 2.5 hours of battery life.
I will also enjoy my laptop also and continue to tell people that it's a great machine.

Have a great night

I saw that you have 1.8GHz on Inspiron 9200, do you think it is a lot faster than the 1.6GHz that would justify to spend an additional $100. Or should I get the 2GHz to really see the difference, but again, I wonder if it's worth it, since I mainly do some computing simulation and watch dvd and I don't play games. I hope 1.6GHz is enought. Thanks.

Hi Ych, I also has 1.8GHZ; if you are thinking about trade off between 1.6 and 1.8, my suggestion is for you to reinvest the money in 1GB memory(get it outside) which will definitely give you more speed; I doubt you will notice the difference between a 1.6 and 1.8 CPU giving the applications you will be doing. A 2.0 CPU IMHO is bit too expensive right now. I am pretty sure 1.8 will become the standard after 6 more months if you can wait that long. :)

Hi Speedyy,

Thanks for the great advice, I think I will go with 1.6gGHz and get the 1G RAM from Newegg. This should last me a while for what I mainly do (Office, photoshop etc.., no gaming). Thanks again!

Hello everyone, I have been browsing this forum and really enjoy it.
I am hoping someone can answer a question dealing with the 9200. I ordered one but did not upgrade to the DVD burner. Can someone tell what DVD burner they come with. I have heard either the NEC ND-6500A or hte Sony DW-R56A. Can someone with the burner in it look and see which one it came with.

Thanks
Chris

I have a Sony DVDRW9 on 9200... crank out a full DVD in 10 mins and works great with generic DVD- 8x discs so far.......
