Hi,

Is there any other manufacturer that trumps the inspiron 9100 in terms of specs. AND price pound-for-pound?

The specs I'm looking for:

P4 3.0HT 15.4" WUXGA
256 MB DDR 400MHz (will remove and add crucial 512MB stick(s))
64 MB ATI radeon 9700 mobility
60g 7200 rpm HD
24X CD-RW/8X DVDROM

w/ discounts taxes and everything, comes out to 1561.11.
Not many manufacturers have the WUXGA screen paired with radeon 9700 and 60g 7200 rpm drive.
I think this is the competitive edge for Dell, not to mention the faster RAM paired with the 3.0 HT cpu.
Better battery life and weight savings would be ideal, but this is a desktop replacement notebook and sacrificing performance isn't in my vocabulary. :D

The HP ZD7000 comes close to the Dell 9100. The HD and Video card are a little lacking though:

Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 3.06 GHz w/HT Technology
Operating System Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home
Memory 256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
Hard Drive FREE Upgrade from 4200 to 5400 RPM 60GB Hard Drive
Primary CD/DVD Drive DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
Networking 54g(TM) Integrated Broadcom 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
Display 15.4" WVA WXGA (1280x800)
Graphics Card 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) FX Go5700
Productivity Software Microsoft(R) Works/Money
Primary Battery 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

$1,648.00 base price as configured above
-$100 instant discount
-$100 rebate
==================================
$1,448

pxc,

I'd rather get the 128MB radeon 9700 (first) than an extra battery (second) :p

I think my Kennsington bag I got for free 3 years ago thanks to Anandtech Hot Deals would still be a perfect fit for this 9100 tank. HEH.

Thanks for the suggestion Rossman.

I got the same free bag. It probably won't fit the 9100 because it's so thick. The inner bag barely fits my Inspiron 8500 (15.4" widescreen).

I bought a 9100 - it's so huge I had to buy a special computer bag for it.
I got the $30 Icon bag - I am happy with it....I got it at amazon here

8600 has the Radeon 9600, the 9100 has the Radeon 9700

I decided to go with the 9100 only because this is now my only computer. Wanted a desktop replacement with similar specs to my desktop, and the 9100 was the only laptop that could offer that (other than a Sager for around $2000)
