yes! it's finally here! i've been waiting for this baby for the longest time!....now all i need r some coupons...feel free to PM me some! 😉

yes the 8600 has upgradable video. not sure where to buy it, but it's been done before with other models. Shame about the 4200rpm harddrive though, eh?

I wonder if the latitude d series will have a countepart to this Inspirion 8600. I prefer the additional usb port, gigabit ethernet ability, and the exterior of the latitude d series but like the options of upgradeable vid and screen options on lower pentium processors.

The Latitude D800 offers upgradable graphics as well.

Really, I did not know that!!!!!

I guess I still at the sucker point of wait and see what's next. I don't need it immediately, so I'll hang on a bit longer to see if an upgraded latitude hits the market. I can see myself being so pissed if I buy the d800 and three weeks later another a better latitude hits the market.

You can get the Compaq x1000 series with the same options as mentioned above but with a Radeon 9200 for $2218 after $100 dollar rebate from Compaqs site. There are always additional discounts available so it would probably be even cheaper. Free shipping

the point of the 8600 is the dx9 compatible graphics chip which the x1000 lacks. FWIW, I used a compaq nx7000 and it looks good but the build quality is the pits and there are several issues with the trackpad.

That and the 5650 should pretty much destroy a 9200, and the fact that it probably draws less power due to .13 doesn't hurt either... the mobile 9600 just sounds too good to pass up which is why I think I'm going to go with a Sager rather than wait for an 8600 😛

By Christmas I want a Radeon 9800 Pro 😀

Argh! If I find a REALLY good deal on the 8600 I may get one. But I don't trust it's keyboard or build quality, I want a larger screen, and I'm still leaning towards a PowerBook. Whenever THOSE get upgraded.

The 4200go keeps up with the 5650go in 3DMark 2001 from the posts on the Dell forums. I would like to see some UT2K3 comparisions though.

60GB - 7200rpm Ultra ATA Hard Drive [add $70 or $2/month1] 🙂🙂

That's got to be a mistake, I'd thought the 8600s weren't shipping until the 18th... and the fact that the 4200 is DX8 and the 5650 a DX9, not being able to run the DX9 test on 2k3 should be all that's needed to destroy the 4200's score...

I8600,15.4 IN WSXGA+,PM,1.3GHZ

Where is My Order?
Delivery Estimate: September 18 - September 22

It's still in the "Boxed" state. I guess it loves being in a box. I dont think theres any doubt the FX5650 can beat the 4200go, just look at the reviews.

Boxed means it is in a box shipping from Malaysia to the USA and then to your home.

Ah, thanks. It could've at least said "in transit" or something. "Boxed" is so... generic...

I8600,15.4 IN WUXGA,PM,1.3GHZ
Delivery Estimate: September 24 - September 26

argh! mine is not even in the production stage

Thats because you ordered the WUXGA. It delayed shipping date by at least one or possibly two weeks. That was on of the primary reasons I ordered the cheaper midrange WSXGA+. I needed it relatively fast for school.

Now all I need is to find a cheap Mobile GeForceFX 5650 and Pentium-M 1.6Ghz CPU.

The widescreen looks nice but there is something I don't get:

On the 15.4 WXGA the Response Time is 35ms
On the 15 Ultra Sharp the Response Time is 25ms

Also, the contrast ratio is higher on the normal 15" LCD.. 400:1 as opposed to 300:1.

So for a gamer, would the 5150 w/ the 15" LCD be a better choice????

Yeah, it's probably better to get a non wide screen if you're a gamer, only problem now is that the 5150s now come with 5200s of which certainly won't give you better gaming performance, however the rest of the system is better suited towards gaming than an 8600. But if you really want a laptop that can really game and don't want to get ripped off I'd look into getting a new Sager with the mobile 9600 and the C class P4s.
