Dell Inspiron 8100 Owners, tell me something!

How fast do you transfer files over a lan? I am only getting 1mB/sec, I think there is seriously something wrong. Please post the transfer speed you are getting, or let me know if you had this same problem, thanks. PS. I've tested it in Win2000 and WinXP.😕

<< Sounds pretty slow, but we need to know how your LAN is setup to help out a little more. >>

I agree w/ astroview shlznit, I have a i4000 and that's a speed that I'd be quick to call Dell about.

Since you guys all own the 8100, can you tell me if it comes with a restore disk? I have a pal who messed his up trying to uninstall software that wasn't win2000 compatible, and he had no clue if it did or not. Before I make him look, I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks!

It doesn't come with a restore disk. It's a full operating system CD that is locked into a Dell BIOS. Meaning it won't install unless the BIOS reports that the manufacturer is Dell.

Where in the hell did you hear that? My Win98 SE and WinXP (one came with my Inspiron 7500 and the other with my Inspiron 8100) work on any system. They are just OEM disk and do not "look at the bios". LOL

1 MB/sec is about right for a 10BaseT network.

Check your network first. Do other computers transfer at the same speed? Are you using a 10BaseT network or faster?

my gut feeling is that these problems aren't related to your computer.

Yes, it does have a restore disk. It came shrink wrapped. My network transfer speeds are the same as my regular computers on my network.

I agree that your problem must be with your network. My pals works fine at around 10 meg.

Do you know if all of the drivers are on the disk? He also has a docking station.

No, all the drivers come on a seperate CD.

And I didn't hear it from anywhere. I have exprienced it. My winXP CD from dell is BIOS locked to a dell system. I have tried it. Even the driver CD won't load the front end if it dosen't detect a dell BIOS.
