Dell Inspirion 5000e. Fan noise!

I just received a hand-me-down laptop from my office to do work at home. It is a Dell Inspiron 5000e. Problem is, the CPU fan on it is so damn annoying! It makes a terribly loud high-pitch whine. I'm gettting headaches because of it. It is a very small fan on the back right corner of the machine..with an intake and an outtake vent from the right side of the machine to the back.

Would replacing this fan help the noise? Is it replaceable w/o calling Tech Support to fix it?

I can't work late at night with this computer because of the fan noise!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
