Hey,

I went fishing over at MSN and may have caught something. I went into their live chat area and asked who was participating in their passport 20% deal. The assistant gave me a list of companies and websites, and one of them was Dell. That's the only one I noticed that wasn't on the live web site.

After she made here post, she came back and said the list she had given wasn't activated yet, and gave me the URL to the MSN site with all the other companies. But, if anyone is waiting for another Dell deal - it may be coming soon :)

20% off on a Dell would be oh so supersweet, it would ALMOST be worth me shipping back my Dimension 4100 but that's really a lot of hassle.

But still 20% off $2000 is $400.

Was there any mention of buy.com or other computer hardware sites? I need another burner because my kid just took my Plextor.

I'm returning the Dell notebook I bought during the Free Shipping days so this 20% off will really be a good deal for me:D...I'll be able to upgrade to a higher cpu speed and order some extra stuff.
I'm definitely waiting for this...

I'd have to imagine that if Dell participated in this, it'd be along the free shipping line and not the 20% off side of things . . . but we can always dream, right?

moks78 - Wise decision. Here's a great thread on Dell notebooks from the general hardware forum.

Basically get as high CPU as you can, at least a Pentium III 600 if not super faster, get only 64MB RAM and buy elsewhere otherwise you're going to get it up the you know what.

I may eat these words later, but: There is NO WAY Dell is going to go with a 20% off promotion. They NEVER do promotions anywhere near that large. Remember, there are two other discounts with the MSN passport deal -- free shipping, and a gift certificate toward a future purchase. I'd say if Dell is doing anything, it's got to be one of the latter two.

I would say it will be for the free shipping, as Dell is currently running similar promos right now.

That Michael Dell is no dummy, Andy taught him well. :) Dell can extend the free shipping promo further than their original plans by getting Uncle Bill to ante up a portion of the cost of offering free shipping.

I say DELL will never give 20% off. I got a DELL through school before, didn't get a great deal. I think I got like 100-200 off, and that was it. And my school is huge, Syracuse University, damn we lost to Miami tonight :( And we use mostly DELLs, the others are SUNs and other workstations.

MontyBurns, I do believe that Microsoft is footing the bill for ALL of these 20% discounts. Otherwise 800.com would be in serious schitt with that 30% + $30 business.

Microsoft has the resources to push this passport BS as much as they want... the prize is potentially huge.

When you click on "Checkout" at a participating vendor, there will be on the bottom a "Passport Express" button, click that and you'll enter in information with that as opposed to the vendor's form.

RossMan,
This notebook is the same one I was complaining abt with dead pixels...like a big dot in the center of the lcd. Used it for three weeks but the dead pixels are just irritating to the eyes so I finally decided to return it several days ago.
As of now, the price I paid for this notebook would buy me a P3 700mhz cpu upgrade fm the original P3 600mhz...parts have gone done in price by at least $200+.
I'll wait before ordering again...the 20% discount fm MS Passport if true, would really make my day.:D
