I was going to get the 8100 but I didnt because I want the Sony P4 which is like $2500. I miss the deal at BB few weeks ago $100 rebate and no interest for a year. But this time the Dell 8200 is really hot, should I wait and get the sony or get this sucker.

BTW what is the difference between the UXGA and Ultra sharp display, it is $100 more?

Ultra =
20% brighter and a 33% improvement in contrast ratio compared to standard notebook displays, giving you richer, sharper images and more colors for viewing photos, watching DVDs and for desktop publishing.
80% faster response time than standard notebook displays improves your viewing of motion video such as DVD movies or video files due to less ghosting or smeared effects.

Increased Viewing Angles

25 degree improvement in viewing angle (horizontal spec) allows you to view the display from any angle without compromising image quality.

ok... i just got the 8100 on the deal earlier

I wasn't going to keep it, but they gave me another 100 off... Down to 1170 shipped. 1gz P3/128mb ram/20g hd/dvd rom/2 batteries/UXGA/radeon 7500. I'd say this is a smoking deal, especially since i got a palm m105 free. They sell for 100 on ebay. Just got another 256mb ram in from crucial. This is a FAST computer. The latest beta ATI drivers are AWSOME... i got like a 25% improvement in open gl.

I missed out on the one day 8100 deal earlier and have thought about the current 8200 deal with free shipping and no sales tax (here in Indiana) from Dell home. After some thought decided to wait for a better deal on a faster P4 processor (like 1.6ghz or higher), but I have a question which is; how often do they have the one day deals like they did on the 8100 laptop? Thanks

Staticfly....how did you get the additional $100 off? What were the conditions of you getting this offer?

You can only get the $100 off if you get the 4yr warranty.

bit didn't get that part apparently.

unless you're asking about a different deal.

I have an 8100, and would like to get the modular 16x CDRW drive. It comes to $139 when purchased with the 8200.

If someone wants to do this deal before the offers expire, and would be willing to order that extra part for me, I would happily reimburse them. alternatively, I could order the notebook for them, and keep the modular drive for myself.

Please email me if interested. Thanks, Dave

Hey guys I got this a week ago with the 15.0 UXGA (native resolution at 1600x1200) and OMG my I'm going blind trying to read the text on it. Dropping the resolution to anything other than native just plain looks terrible. I've increased font size, dpi, browser font size, etc and it just looks weird - some text is HUGE while others require a magnifying glass. My vision is near 20/20 so I don't think that's the problem. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm tempted to return it and get regular XGA with 1024x768

EDIT: btw trying to carry it with one hand made me nervous b/c the case feels a bit flimsy.

that's what i was worried about....can anyone else share their experiences w/ uxga vs sxga vs xga?

i know more pixels is better for games and photos, but like itswhatsfordinner said, is it uncomfortable elsewhere?

If you want to see what the native resolution for each display type go here
HERE then click on the Learn More to the right of the Display option. Make no mistake though, the screen itself is very bright and sharp but the high resolution can be annoying to those of us who don't like it that high. Any thoughts?

Well I've put in a request to return it. It's a nice little laptop with a lot going for it but I can't imagine squinting at something for hours and hours. Unfortunately getting anything other than the higher resolution models will mean you won't have all the higher-end video card options available to you. :(

deal is dead. I missed that the $100 off coupon expired 4/30, even though the others end today. I snoozed, I lost. :(

All I know is the Dell notebooks were much more expensive than I could get elsewhere. I decided to try powernotebooks.com and will let people know how it goes when my notebook arrives next week. Was a lot less than Dell and gave me more options..

Got the following:

PowerPro IV:24 M1
15" SXGA+ TFT Active Matrix w/ATI RADEON 4X AGP,
1.4GHz Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor ? M w/400MHz System Bus
Speed,
30.0GB Ultra ATA/100,
512MB (2 DIMMS) PC2100 DDR Memory,
Combo Toshiba 8X DVD/8x8x24 CD-RW w/Softwares,
3.5" 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive,
Built-in 56k V.90 Data/Fax Modem,
Built-in 10/100BaseT Ethernet w/RJ-45 Jack,
2 Built-in IEEE 1394 Ports,
Smart Li-ion Battery,
NO Second Hard Disk Drive:,
Windows2000 Professional, *** didn't want to deal with XP (same price for XP Pro)
Productivity Software Bundle, **includes quicken, real player and other basic stuff
NO Software:, ****work gives me office because I work at home too occasionally...
Full Range Auto Switching AC Adapter,
Auto/Airplane 12V Adapter,
NO Port Replicator:,
NO External Numeric Keypad:,
Deluxe Carrying Case,
1-Year Parts, 3-Year Labor, Lifetime 24/7 Telephone Technical Support,
UPS Ground

They had a perfect reseller rating with over 200 ratings . Also, one part was backordered (was originally going to get a faster northwood chip for about the same as the 1.4 P4-M, but need the unit ASAP. They called me on a SATURDAY (small company is usually closed) so I could decide what to do..

The laptops at powernotebooks.com can be upgraded for fair prices, unlike Dell...For instance, upping the hard drive by 10GB at Dell is at least $100. But for the base Inspiron 8200, I think the deal is better. Most of the laptops at powernotebooks are SXGA, I opted for the Dell Ultrasharp UXGA+, probably the best screen you can get right now.

It's best to check several places to see what kind of deals are available with exactly the options you are looking for.
