Dell Heatsink

I am currently using a dell dimension e520 computer, and ontop of my heatsink is a gigantic cover, i wanted to put in an 8800 gtx graphics card into my pc but i dont think it will fit, is it possible to take that big black thing out of my computer which is ontop of my heatsink ?

Sorry if this is supposed to be in the video n graphics forums i wasnt sure since it was heatsink involved

Here is the HTML version of the "removing and installing parts" service manual. http://support.dell.com/suppor...EN/parts.htm#wp1043338 Have a look under the topics Processor and Processor fan. I can't be sure but it looks like the cover and heatsink are one unit. If there was an extra removable black piece, it looks like it would be needed to "duct" the air to of from the cpu fan. I'm not an expert so hopefully someone more familiar with Dell products will offer more help.

The black cover is a duct to pull air off the heatsink. I would not recommend that you remove it.

The plastic shroud holds the heatsink in place.

The 305W power supply might not be enough for an 800GTX, and I doubt it has dual PCI-Express power connectors.

i already got an ocz 600 watt psu dual 6 pin pci e connectors its just that i want to kno if i can fit the card in , or my only other option would be to get another heatsink i guess ?

The Dell doesnt use standard Intel heatsink/fan mounting holes, so you would have to make the aftermarket heatsink mounting up yourself

so i would need a new motherboard to use a new heatsink to make things easier ? i dont kno what an aftermarket is btw, sorry im not too good with pcs when it gets into detail

Are you currently using your OCZ powersupply with your Dell? That's very strange b/c Dell uses a proprietary (non-ATX-standard) pin layout in their powersupply motherboard connectors. In the past, if you tried to hook up a standard ATX powersupply to a Dell motherboard, you would blow everything up.

Dell PCs use proprietary parts; normal aftermarket things like CPU heatsinks won't fit or can't be mounted.

If you really want a high-performance gaming PC, build it yourself. Use the Dell as a fileserver...or paperweight.

yes im currently using the ocz 600 watt psu with my dell pc, it fit perfectly and works fine with everything. so far no explosions happened
