Dell have pissed me off no end.

In the past few years I've spent a lot of my hard earned money with Dell. I've recommended their machines to friends and family who have bought Dell machines on my recommendation, but this has left me reeling.

On Feb 15th 2005 I ordered some spares for a laptop at a cost of just over $125.
I paid by debit card and received the order confirmation a few minutes later via email.
I checked my bank account online to see if the card had been charged, it had been charged twice.
I called a CSR to get this sorted out and was told that the money would be back in my account within 24 hours, I was given a coupon code for $50 which was acceptable to me at the time.
I checked my bank account (After waiting 30 hours) and the same 2 charges were present on the account.

I, like others have bills to pay and have never been a late payer, however this has caused me to miss payment and have therefore incurred late fees.

I called back to say my money still wasn't in my account and was told to expect a call within 24 hours from his supervisor about this issue which I received on the morning of the 16th.

When I spoke with Joshua who told me he was a customer care supervisor yesterday (16th) he promised I'd have the money back into my account on the 17th.
It's still not appeared.

The result of all this is that I'm still left without funds to pay my bills, and a customer "Care" representative who didn't seem to understand nor care whatsoever.
I was told that the first rep should not have told me 24 hours and that was a mistake.
I explained to Joshua that I couldn't pay my bills with a Dell coupon and tried to explain how this affected me however it didn't seem to concern him as he told me I'd received the $50 coupon (For the original 24 hour loss of funds).

I have always been an advocate of Dell machines in the past and have had nothing but good to say about their laptops however the last few days have been an unfunny joke.

I've had nothing but good to say about Dell laptops up til now however this is crazy.
Any ideas? I call them however I'm transferred into a black hole or to someone who doesn't understand simple English.

besides "they're by far the cheapest/best deal out there", what good things do you have to say about Dell laptops?😕

its never a good idea to pay for stuff like that with a debit card, especially if money is tight. sometimes the hold they place on the debit card is way more than the amount charged and you won't have access to those funds until its released.

Yep. If it was a credit card, you'd have no problems at all. Debit cards are solely for people who have trashed their credit and are not responsible enough fto use a credit card. If you can use a credit card wisely, a debit card is really the worst way to pay.

If $125 is keeping you from paying multiple bills on time, maybe you should have waited until you had more $$ to buy these spare parts. Next time, don't use a debit card. Best of luck to you.

Reggae4k - Here's a shiny medal for finding my other post.
Why you're not a Google researcher I'll never know.

I think I figured it out, either you're 12 years old or simply dumb.

exactly what i was thinking....dont be a dumbass, use a good cc, i had this happen to me once with northwest airlines, i was using amex gold, i called nwa and they said they'd do it, but a week later nothing, i then called amex and they took care of it same day

Two lessons here:

#1) If you are so little money saved that $125 missing from your checking account prevents you from paying bills, maybe you should not have spent any money in the first place.

#2) As stated previously, do not use a debit card for online purchases.

this taught you a lesson. Don't buy anything until you pay your bill.

It is Dell's fault that they charged you twice by accident, but it is clearly your own fault for having just enough in your bank account to cover your bill and the purchase.

If late bill paying will cause you to pay late fee, isnt it common sense to get them done first if you absolutely short on money?

BTW: I used my debit card for buying a laptop form Dell, it worked just fine

I agree, I suppose it was foolish of me to expect a company such as Dell to charge me for what I'd ordered and no more.

Thank you all for your help on this, I'm glad I posted this here and it's good to know there are people on Anandtech who care.

It's appreciated.

I agree with all the others who said it's generally a bad idea to use debit cards for online purchases (assuming that's not your only choice). While I had no problems in the year+ that I used my debit card for such purchases (and before I bothered to get a credit card), it's nice having an extra layer of protection, basically.
