Nothing but good news for AMD. Anything that sells chips and puts their brand out there is a good thing. Will I buy a Dell? Not a chance, but a hell of a lot of people out there will.

Ironic really. Intel has been on the back foot with their processors for some time, and just when they bring out the C2D chips that really put them back in the lead over AMD, Dell brings out AMD based machines.
Actually, I think it makes Dell look a bit clueless, but that's nothing new.

For its new OptiPlex 745 business desktop, Dell said it developed its own bundle of business-friendly technologies instead of using Intel's vPro platform. Intel has seen strong sales in recent years for bundles of software and hardware such as its Centrino package for wireless notebook PCs. The company launched vPro in September as an effort to extend that strategy to business desktops.
The company did not rule out the chance that it might add Intel's bundle to future desktops, but said vPro had to mature first."

PCI-E 16X? That's actually nice, but nothing that eMachines hasn't already done. 😉
Thing is that this is good news for more than what has already been mentioned and the obvious benefits to AMD. The good news for us enthusiasts is twofold.
1) Makes it easier to recommend building AMD systems. No, your grandmother wanting to send email does not need an overclocked C2D with a Radeon X1950XTX, but a nice socket AM2 Sempron with IGP is right in line with her needs and a better value than Celerons at this time. If anyone questions the choice for AMD, just say "but Dell's selling them."
2) Some of us know people who we DO NOT WANT TO SUPPORT. Yes, there are those out there who are complete nubs at computers and you know for a fact that if you build a system for them, you'll never have a moment's rest and you'll be doing free tech support for life (yours, not the computer's). For people like that who may have heard that I know a thing or two about computers, I try to hide the fact that I can "fix" computers from them. If they ask, I can just say, "hey, just buy this Dell AMD system - it should be really nice." Again, the "better" C2D wouldn't be a choice for most of these people since they're usually looking for under $500 systems.
Also heard that Dell is selling lots PCs in China. My friend there got one for like 500 bucks, probably still a P4, but ... considering people there are more price conscious and is always looking for things that will do what they want and no more. I think AMD will do wonders for Dell at large mass markets like China/India. Good price, good enough performance for common usage and a decent enough name brand.

Even though C2D is just coming out, this gives Dell a huge leg up on Intel, who has bullied Dell like its b*tch for years by threatening them to increase prices if they even think of going AMD. Now that AMD is actually a viable alternative, and Dell is slowly sneaking them in the door, and Dell still occupying the #1 spot in build-to-order PC's, Intel is going to have to actually have the superior product in order to get sales.
