Dell Flat Panel Comparison - 22" E228WFP or 20" 2007WFP

I'm in the market for a new Dell LCD monitor. I have a 20" 4:3 UltraSharp, and could not be happier.

I'm looking to buy a wide screen monitor to use in a dual monitor setup with my existing 20" UltraSharp. I'm looking at the 2007WFP (20" Widescreen) and the E228WFP (22" Widescreen). However, the difference in model numbers and the price difference concerns me a little. Why is the 20" more expensive than the 22"?

20": $339
22": $309

Anyone have any insight or experience with these monitors?

Is there an alternate 22" widescreen I should consider?

The E228WFP is a TN panel, I believe (less expensive). The 2007WFP uses a S-IPS or S-PVA panel (Dell uses both types), both of which are higher-quality panels.

Do you think there will be a noticable difference between the 20" ultrasharp I already own and the 22" TN panel as they sit next to each other on my desk? Is it big enough that I will notice it long term?

It really depends on the user. I would notice the difference, personally. You might not.

Tn panel = 6 bit color + dithering to kind of give the impression of 8 bit color

s-ips/pva = 8 bit color w/o dithering

i believe that the tn has worse viewing angles than the other two as well

well just an FYI - been using the E22 since last xmas and i find it to be a nice monitor

this monitor is being used on the game computer - games and only games. have had no issues
fast paced FPS - medium paced MMORPG - and everything inbtwn all look just fine.

colors look good. viewing angles good. no complaints. got this monitor at the xmas 2day boxing day special from Dell.

All 22-inch widescreens are TN panels. The main weakness of TN panels is the vertical viewing angle. read about this HERE (MID PAGE)

You 20-inch 4:3 monitor has a high quality panel (S-PVA or S-IPS), without significant viewing angle problem. My suggestion is to get another one : This One

If you go the 22-inch widescreen route (mandatory TN), you will find that your 2 monitors are greatly mismatched, and will probably be disappointed by the 22-incher (not to say that a 22-incher cannot be a valid choice for a single-monitor setup)

If you really want to go widescreen and match the quality of your existing monitor, you have to splurge for the Dell 2407 Better wait to get it on sale. it was $ 569 a few weeks ago.

See my thread about buying the 22". I ended up with an Acer for $250 from Newegg and it's pretty badass. I know some people are deadset against the TN panels, but if it wasn't TN it would be probably a few hundred more for a comparable size. $250 for a giant screen like this is a smokin deal though, IMO, no matter what. And to be honest it looks great to me, comparable to my L90D. Maybe I need glasses.

I would stick with the same type of monitor. If it's a single monitor setup, it's not bad. But if you mix two different types of panels side by side, I can GUARANTEE you that you will notice the difference. I know I did. I did the same thing as you did, same size, but different panels and the less quality one was an eye-sore. I sold it at cost to a relative and went for the higher priced one.

I have a 2007wfp. I upgraded from a rather generic 5:4 LCD panel (probably TN). The difference in color is amazing. Colors are much more vibrant on the 2007wfp and this is coming from someone who didn't think he was that nit-picky about stuff like that.

It's worth the price IMO.

probably too late but... i have the E207wfpc at work, and while i only use it for work stuff (programming, surfing, etc) i find it to be an extremely nice monitor, it sits at about a 30 degree angle from me on my right (next to the 2? year old 2405) and i notice no issues with viewing angles or color between the two. even when viewing the same photo on both panels.

although the older 2405 could also have a TN panel?

i tend to believe the different between the panel technologies is akin to the difference between HDDVD and BlueRay, you have your fanboys of both saying crap about both, when the average user wouldn't know the difference between either compared to a standard dvd.

i think unless you're doing photo editing for a living you'd be better off saving your money and doing some serious gaming on a wider panel :)

No, no, & no.

I'm sorry, but the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD argument is not comparable to this at all.
There are valid arguments for both camps; there isn't a clear "winner".

When it comes to LCDs, no knowledgeable person is going to claim a TN is better than an S-PVA/P-MVA or S-IPS panel in any way, since there's nothing better about them.
Okay, response time is usually slightly better on TNs, except who actually sees ghosting on sub ~16ms displays, seriously?

While you may choose to not notice the differences, if have a good VA/IPS panel beside a good TN, there is no way in the world you should prefer the TN, unless you actually like seeing colors shift as you move your head, or you prefer the inaccurate exaggerated contrast/color TNs have.

Also, while you can somewhat ignore these issues on smaller LCDs, when you start using TNs on larger displays, the issues become very apparent to anyone who likes quality, since the larger size exacerbates the problems.

So sure i'm a fanboi i guess...
I'm a quality fanboi.
