Dell E1705 switches from 7800Go to X1400

It's about half the performance.....but is now the cheapest way to get Core Duo and discrete graphics memory.

------------------------------

It's back as an option for the e1705, but not the e1505. If it becomes available for the e1505 I might bite.

As I understand the switch, it wasn't about saving money as much as shipping product. The 7800 is in short supply, so in order to keep shipping E1705/9400's Dell switched to the ATI video board.

Very likely Dell will offer both after the supply chunch eases. A guess. 🙂

They aren't going to get people to upgrade their 9300 like this. Dual core is nice but not enough to downgrade your graphics (not to mention the ability to put a 6800 Ultra or 7800 GTX in there).

Unlikely....the 1505 is to the 1705 as the 600 is to the 6000.

with the X1400, the E1705 is dirt cheap right now. You're talking about $1100 with shipping for a 17" dual core laptop with discrete graphics and 100GB HD.

The sense I get from notebookforums.com is that this switch was precipitated by a shortage of the 7800, not a pricing plan. People are expecting with some certainty that the 1505 will get the X1400 in a couple of weeks. The 1705 is the 9300 to the 1505's 6000, and the X1400 is the 1505's X300.

Well..this move has just ruined the e1705 as a mid to high end gaming laptop. This move "might" have been driven by availability of the 7800 gpu...or a marketing effort to redirect people to the XPS M170. I was very seriously thinking about ordering the e1705, but not now that it has been newtered. Observations that this x1400 gpu would be nice offering in the e1505 might be right on target. Luck was with the people who got this lappy before they castrated it.

I agree, I'd bet this is a move to 'de-tune' the 1705 to redirect buyers to the XPS line. This was an unbeatable combo for the price.

Isn't the x1400 just an update of the x300 incorporating SM3 (or whatever) and the "bus ring" technology? I think it's a 4 pipeline card.

I'm in the market for a 15" widescreen but don't want integrated graphics. If the 1505 was offered with an 8 pipeline graphics section, I would buy one right now.

Ya, most data about this chipset seems to indicate that its performance is only marginally better than the x300. Simply not a acceptible solution for a gaming capable laptop.

They were selling tons of these e1705's with the 7800go, robbing the boutique makers of business, with what one would assume to be a slight margin. It wouldn't make sense for dell to castrate this tool for screwing their competitors just to shift buyers to their more expensive, but less price competitive, cousin. I predict that within the next few months there will be an actual video card in the e1705, with the X1400 being switched to the e1505. I've heard rumors that another issue that caused dell to pull the 7800go is heating and airflow.

Any one know if they will offer the 7800 Go on the 9400 agian? Went to purchase mine last night and was more then disappoionted.

I wouldn't think it was a heating/airflow issue. The 9300/XPS support the 6800 Ultra and 7800 GTX in the same chassis. It was probably a matter of availability.

I was looking to buy a mid/high end notebook to run gentoo linux on. But with no nvidia video card, that idea is shot down. I guess i'm gonna have to look at other options.

I ordered a e1705 on March 1st and my laptop still hasnt shipped. I received a call today for a Dell rep and he told me that there is an "engineering" issue with the 7800go and its not working properly in the e1705. sounds like BS to me but he said that none of the e1705s would be shipped until this issue is resolved. He said right now they have the estimated ship date to May 21st. WTF that is 53 days away. He said I could A. stay with my options and wait. B. take the ATI x1400 (POS that it is....umm no thanks) C. onboard video or D. get the XPS M170 and he would give me $750 off my order. now I am debating if waiting is better then a M170. Obviously Dual core is better then pentium M but the 7800GTX spanks the 7800GO. What to do.

If you don't do a lot of encoding, just go with the XPS M170.
