Is there a way to go to the Dell software & download website and download updates for a Dell (M/S windows based) computer using a Ubuntu/Linux based computer ?

When I go to the Dell website and try to download the BIOS for instance for a certain DELL machine, all I get downloaded is some type of DELL download manager program which will not run on my Ubuntu computer.

I know that in the past that these Dell downloads could be downloaded directly to a Ubuntu computer and then moved over to the Dell/windows machine for installing.

Thanks.

I don't have problems downloading drivers from Dell support on my Ubuntu box. When I click on the download button, I'm given the choice of using either the download manager (which, like you say isn't a Linux program) or the web browser.

However, you can only download files from the Dell website one at a time using the web browser. If you try to select multiple files to download, it will always try to install and launch the Dell download manager software.

I am given NO such choice. Only to OPEN or SAVE.

Have any ideas as to why I am not getting the same prompt as you ?

What version of Ubuntu are you using ?

Thanks.

Linux Mint 11, but it works just the same for me on Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04.

It is probably a website issue related to a browser cookie - try to delete the Dell cookies within your web browser (easy to do if it is Firefox) to see if it resolves the problem.

Yes, I thought of that, it was a cookie named Dell.com.

I got rid of it and now I got the prompt like you mentioned.

Apparently, they, Dell have changed something because I used to download their drivers, etc. and I never got any such prompt.

Thanks for your help.

If you know the file name, use: ftp://ftp.dell.com/ .. Login and password: anonymous

That's new knowledge to me, thanks.

For downloading dell drivers on Linux, I never have any problems. Choosing simple mode you can download the drivers one by one.

When I need to download many drivers (when I reinstall the system). I just use windows+dell download manager to get all of them. Then use USB drive to copy files to Linux system.
