I went on the website and it doesn't say nothing about getting a CD in the mail. why can't they just include it in the first place?

A lot of makers stopped doing that after people would pirate the included OS across several systems. This PC have a restore partition?

So what if you want 64-bit Windows XP?

no problem. also, you can create a os cd from the recovery utility. go to this link and scroll down to the dell os recovery cd creation and manual operating system reinstall. looks like they are going to make you waste a cd rather than them use their own.

edit: also her209, no clue to your question, sorry. the information i have is what i got from dell at work. i was wondering the same thing a month or two ago when we got a shipment of systems with no os cd (image and then ghosted). but i had to call for a repair request, and i asked them that over the phone while waiting for my service # and the little they told me was enough to research it more.

I just bought a 700m via the 750 off 1500 deal and it specifically said "no OS CD is included, if you want to restore blah blah blah""

so no, no OS CD for me either.

it said no CD also for me, but i was pissed off and they sent me it after i asked.

here's the transcript of the email i got:

Operating System CD's, utility CD's and hard copy owner's manuals are no longer sent with most Dimension and Inspiron systems. Dell is replacing the information electronically on the system hard drive. With this change, Dell is reducing waste and making our technology easier to use.

Plus, we are continually looking for ways to pass savings and value onto our customers.

I always get a cd with dell. It was my understanding that all PCs that came with the recovery partition BS were now able to get a CD.

Same here, but according to an earlier post it's a recent change.

Personally I would refuse to buy if I didn't get an OS CD. The first thing I did when I got my Dimension was zap the drive (love that utility) and do my own partitioning/installation.

Sorry Dell but I control the partitions on my drives.

Crap...I guess it is. Didn't HP get forced to provide a cd instead of a recovery partition? Maybe my memory is failing or the fact that they provide a utility to make one changes things.

that's exactly what i did. as soon as my 700m came in the mail, i did my own partitioning and killed all of dell's partitions. naturally, i lost the OS that came with the machine and all diagnostics and utilities. i, therefore, emailed dell, and they sent me the disks. i'm happier now.

dell really should provide this option to keep the disks. i don't care if it's an extra $5 -- i'd go for it. it's fair enough that it's still free and they don't give you a hard time for it, but it's a hassle to have to go through customer service channels in order to get it.

The include useless software discs for useless apps like sonic recording and word perfect...they could cut out those two cds and just give me an OS cd. that would reduce waste defnitely.

If they don't include an OS CD, that means I have to pirate the OS when I want to reformat, right? :p

I have been going back and forth with !@ Dell for a month!

I ordered a 700m on 4/11.
I requested a pressed OS and drivers CDs for my WINXP Pro SP2 on
4/27/2005

After verifiying with Dell support that I needed XP Pro, not HOME, and
SP2, not SP1, I check on this order a few days before it ships and find
they have it down for XP HOME. I call and cancel it, and tell them to
send me the correct one. They ship me Home despite the cancellation.

I call again, tell them exactly what I need, and they try and send me
XP
Pro SP1. I have to call them back again and straighten this out. I am
not asking for peace in the middle east, just one XP Pro SP2 disk, just
like what was on my laptop when I purchased it.

I call and have them try and send me the correct one ( I have the
driver
CD now from the HOME shipment, so all I need is the CORRECT OS cd) I
talk it over with the rep. again, they will send it out (according to
DELL on 5/16) and it is entered into the system correctly this time.

SO imagine my surprise when DELL CANCELS THE ORDER
yaaaarrrrrrrrgh! ... no reason, no
notice, no nuthin.

I am tired talking to incompetent customer service reps who can't even
take the time to figure what disk to submit in an order form. I even
typed out exactly what I needed and confirmed it with DELL CHAT and
they messed it up too.

It has taken over 7 contacts with Dell and nearly a month to have the
correct 1 CD shipped to me.

I had one guy tell me he couldn't help me cuz I was in wrong dept and to contact Refurbished sales.. WTF? I had already dealt with the same chat group several times to get this friggin CD! The other chat disconnected on me.

If anyone has a contact who is competent enough in Dell customer service to help out and can speak English well, please let me know!!

Checking my record I show 60 PCs coming since 3/15. All of them came with OS disks. Is this a Home only issue?

If I were to call Dell to request a Windows XP Home CD for my Dimension 4600, what exactly should I say/request?
