Is it double sided or single sided? My old Dell wouldn't take single-sided (high density) ram.

It being double sided is the problem, I had an old Dell sold to a friend, he bought 32 MB RAM (double sided) to bump it up to 64 MB, but the new chip only showed half of the amount 16 MB from the new RAM stick, told him about it and he got single sided 32 MB, and it worked like a charm.

Did you tell Dell they are dumba$$ for having to tell you to reinstall an OS for that? Maybe you should find a link on their site about upgrading RAM and send it to them.

Edit: and here's a linky for them.
