Hardly, Dell builds thier own "dell branded" hardware. I would guess the "dell branded" x850xt is worth $300 and probably performs like a x800 XL. LCD, meh, cant really gauge. Gig of "dell branded" ram < $100 and probably has timings that Corsair value ram would pummel. Dude, if you can build your own--stay away from Dell. Dell products are for grannies and noobs. This comes from a guy who has actually owned TWO dells!

What a dumbazz comment.

Dell can be for people wanting to get the "best bang for their buck", I bought a Dell 3.4ghz, 512mb, 9800pro etc system for under $800 a year ago and my video card, ram and HD were all made by major manufacturers. When I bought my rig the cpu alone was over $400 on pricewatch.

BTW I have a feeling my "granny" system is much better than what you have.

Tom

Shut your pie hole. I have owned TWO dells personally, plus i have worked on more than a dozen at various institutions. Dell uses absolutely the cheapest hardware known to man. My last "top end" dell (dimension 8200) ran me just about $1900 (with academic discounts, rebates, no monitor, etc). And this was NOT bleeding edge setup--just a notch below though. Yea, bang for buck. During the time that it was my primary home machine it had:

3 PSUs
3 HDs
2 Mobos
2 CPUs
2 DVD/CD-RW drives

Im including the original equipment, so 2 means the origial failed and was replaced. Not to mention, a system that fails this MUCH, how much time did i WASTE on hold with dell only to have Sarita, or Sanjay, or whoever i cant understand tell me that i would have to run two hours of diagnostics before they would send replacements!? Bah! If you can build do it. If youre a granny or a noob go with dell. "Bang for buck" my a$$.

BTW, here are a few of my specs:

MSI K8 Neo4
3500+ Winnie
1GB Corsair XMS 3500
BFG 6800GT OC

Still stock. Now, do you still think your granny rig is "better?"

[edit] Stupid brain. I think i paid under $2000, but was thinking under $3000. Damn, now i have to dig up receipts! :| [/edit]

Bolded for emphasis... that is the funniest and stupidest comment I've seen in awhile.

Dell doesn't make anything, almost everything they have is 3rd party. The X850XT is the same as a retail box'ed ATI, the memory is probably Crucial, and the LCD is probably a rebadged Samsung. Now if you think an ATI X850XT (at this time) is for grannies, then you need a serious reality check.

Have you ever cracked a dell case? Hmmm...? I dare ya to. Now go! What you will find is a "dell branded" card with an ATI chipset manufactured with the cheapest price in mind.

a.) Using quality parts (Asus mobo, Seagate, ATI, Audigy 2, name brand DDR-2, etc.), I came out to just under $1700, so if you don't have spare or carryover parts and are building from the ground up, the DELL is not a bad deal, unless you have to pay sales tax for your state. The only real plus factored in my price is a better quality P.S. and Windoz Pro. The Asus mobo would have more features and O/C'ing, but Intel makes superb mobos as well, esp. from a reliability standpoint. The 6 series P4, DDR-2, and x850 are what drives the price up.

Hmmm ... I thought Sapphire was the OEM for BBA cards.

Yes, I am the gullible (not gulliable, and I know the difference between $2000 and $3000). Dell really got one over me when they sold me a 3.4ghz, 512mb, 9800pro system for under $800 (a year ago), they also got me when I bought a few laptops for under $400 each.

So now DELL also makes PSU and MB wow who would of thought one company could make so many products... I guess they make their own LCD's and printers too...

BTW my "cheap azz" psu runs my system with a 3.4ghz p4, 1 gb of memory, 2 hd's, sound card, 9800pro, dvd burner and at least 5 usb devices 24/7 without any problems.

my experience is dell is only good when you

A) find a cheap deal, like a Dim 3000 for $300-400 and dont want to game, or really do anythin but internet and wordprocess

or

B) girlfriends.

When I upgrade at the office, I buy a Dell. When I upgrade at home, I build my rig. There seems to be a longer time gap between those upgrades lately for some reason. I NEVER save money building my own, because I get too crazy cutting edge on the hardware. I also suffer from retail box-ITIS. Nevertheless, the Dell works fine for me at work (a one-man office), and the thrill of the build is satisfied at home. Years ago when I started this, Dell had a standard 3 year warranty. Now they charge for that. <my 2 cents>

$1600? Why are you paying so much when there are many dell dimension deals in the hot deals section, gotapex, fatwallet...

Dell PC's are only worth it when they are on sale or have special deals from time to time. Best to wait for these. Like an 8400 for ~600-700 w/o monitor. That to me is worth it. Their upgrades that you pay for are not worth it unless they are FREE.

If you're spending $1600, better to build one yourself if you're up to it. Else, Dells are the only pre-built pc's I would buy. They are a better deal than others out there like Alienware.
