its a dell MB using intel chipset 865e

2.4 ghz no HT Pentium 4 => 533mhz FSB
512 mb ddram pc2700 @ 333mhz
currently, 64mb gforce 4 mx 440 agp 8x in an agp 3.0 slot (1x-8x compatible)
250W rated power supply, but in reality, is 300W
40gig western digital hard drive with 75% free space
VGA port, Sharp LCD

250 dollar non-negotiable budget

does anyone have this system and can attest to the compatibility of it with a 6600gt, specificaly BFG or Leadtek, and will it physically fit AND work decently well with the following for a mid-gamer:

warcraft 3
halo: combat evolved w/ medium settings (1024x768 would be nice) and decent performance
counterstrike: condition zero
the new HL2 source engine games (the purpose of the upgrade)
...nothing else, just the above

please tell me if there's anything else that i need to buy, and does the 6600 gt require a direct connection to the power supply?

6600 GT

I assume that's the card you were talking about. It should fit, and comes with a cord to connect it to your power supply. I see no reason why it wouldn't work. If I could fit and maintain a 5700 ultra (which was ginourmous) into my old Dimension 4500, you should have no problems setting up one of these. If you decide to buy it enjoy 🙂

EDIT: For $250 just get a 6800... here

It should be a piece of cake for the D4600's PSU. I have a 4600 with a 3.2GHz P4C, 9800 Pro, 3 HDs, 1 DVD burner, 2x512MB PC3200 memory running on the default PSU with no problems.

thank you for the replies...
any other suggestions?
sneaky: i'll consider the 6800

edit: i have a sharp LL-T17A4 (VGA only) with a 20ms response time, native res: 1280x1024 @ 60Hz=> is this going to affect how the graphics appear with the new card?

i ask this because i notice the edges of cliffs and the like are jagged in Halo, is it just the vid card or the monitor (i dont see the "ghosting" effect though)

AA is set to "application controlled" right now, and halo looks good at 1280x1024 (no more jagged edges), but its impossible to run at that resolution on a crap geforce 4 (it can handle Cs1.6 and CZ really well, though, so i'm happy with that)

i guess i'll just have to try a new card, both for halo and for future games

Yep, the GF4MX had nowhere enough muscle to do AA in a recent game. You should be very pleased once you get a modern card like 6600GT or 6800NU (which should also work in the 4600 as the 128MB version actually uses less power than the 6600GT). You should read up on web reviews to see how these two cards compare to each other.
