Dell Computer fighting me to the DEATH

TWills

Senior member
Here's the situation. This computer when I got it was absolutely bloated with spyware. Ran Microsoft Anti spyware and Webroot Spysweeper on it several times, each time turing up more spyware. Ran AVG Antivirus and turned up 9 worms and 6 trojans. Got rid of those. Still has 37 processes running on it at startup (!!!). Also, the computer does not recognize double-clicking in My Computer or Control Panel. I have to select an icon, go to File, and hit OPEN from there. What is going on here? Can I fix this thing?

P.S. I tried to get into msconfig to shut down some startup programs, but when I go to run in the start menu and type it in it claims the file "msconfig" does not exist. Surely Windows 2000 Pro has an msconfig file, right?

You are incorrect on this.
Win2K does not have msconfig.
You can, however, copy the file from an XP PC to the 2K box and then run it.

MSCONFIG is easily compromised by Spyware. I would recommend using Mike Lin's free Startup Control Panel instead.

You MUST disable malicious BHOs and run your spyware scans from Safe Mode on a badly infected system, or you're wasting your time.

Please refer to my detailed spyware removal instructions here: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Hope this helps...

Went into safe mode and removed all spyware (again). Still having the nasty refusal-to-accept-any-double-clicking-in-mycomputer-or-control-panel problem. It feels like some OS files are missing, cause I've noticed a few other nitpicky problems with the mouse.

Why don't you just format and reinstall?? If you just got it, you shouldn't have anything to lose. I'm assuming it's a used Dell from a private party?? I know Dell is getting bad, but they can't have sunk that low. Could they?

Whoops, just had a thought, bet you just took it in for repair.
