Dell 700m - Which internal DVD burner fits ?

I purchased the Dell 700m laptop w/ the std. DVD-Rom. I though all internal swapable notebook drives used the same connector+layout but after further examing the NEC ND-6500A DVD writeable drive that I purchased.....the connector is a female instead of a male and on the opposite end that the notebook is expecting.

What DVD dual layer writeable drive fits the Dell 700m laptop, I've searched all over and cannot find any info.

Thanks....

hey, agulfer, i thought it was not the right fit drive too. The drive inside the 700m is actually the same connector, but there's just an adapter on it. Take out the whole drive cage and the adapter and insert the it into the ND6500A. I almost sold my DVD burner because of this.

That's good news. Sorry.... I'm going to need a little more help. When I take the current drive out it is surrounded by a cage. Do I take this cage off the drive and put in on my ND6500a ? Or do you mean to take the drive cage out of the laptop itself ? Isn't the connector still on the wrong side ?

Got it !

I never actually took the cage off the orignal Dell drivesince it appeared the connector adapter was part of the drive. After taking the screws off the cage and prying the cage off (glue) the Dell dvd-rom drive, the drive connector adapter was exposed and came off. I put Dell connector adapter and cage on the ND6500 and it installed perfectly into my 700m. Like you, I was ready to return the nd6500a to newegg because I thought it was the wrong setup, but thanks to you I now have my burner installed. Thanks a bunch for your help !!

Great forum !

No problem, glad things worked out. I also have a 7200RPM Hitachi 60GB HD in there and this 700m is a pretty sweet little machine

Yeah, I'm really liken the 700m. Read some negative feedback on the keyboard size, mouse pad and the screen glare....but I was pleasantly suprised with both, non issues with me.

Did you find a noticable difference w/ the 7200rpm hd ?
