Dell 600M not charging; battery light blinks red

I've got a dell 600m laptop here that won't charge.

-if a battery with a charge is installed, it runs fine
-if no battery is installed and the ac unit is plugged in, it runs fine
-if a battery is installed and you plug in the ac unit, it will not charge. it will sometimes blink red instead. I haven't been able to reproduce it consistently. but the battery charge light will not come on , and the battery will not charge.

So the machine runs fine on AC power, I have swapped out batteries with another machine to charge with no problem.

Any known problems with these dell machines that would cause the battery to not charge? Works on AC power, works on battery power, but it simply will not charge batteries that charge fine in another machine.

I appreciate any input!

I have worked with other Dell laptop models (not the 600m) that have exhibited the exact same problem. Dell deemed it as a dysfunctional motherboard and wanted outrageous cash to fix it. I tinkered with it for a while, but never took the laptop apart to check out the internals since I didn't want to take a chance and make it any worse by moving something that could just be loose.

Needless to say, the guy ended up just buying a new laptop after the semester ended.

Best of luck to ya!
