Ok so this weekend Dell SB S&P has 30% off storage products. Also there is a 10% off coupon floating around (ie goto a technical bargains type site).

4X/2.4X/12X DVD+R/+RW & 16X/10X/32X CD-RW Internal EIDE Drive for Dell Dimension 4500 / 4550 / 8200 / 8250 (will work in pretty much any desktop as long as you have a open bay).

$249.95
-$74.50 (30% off, storage products)
-$17.50 (additional 10% off, with coupon)
+tax
(free shipping)
-------------
$157.47 + tax

Deal will self destruct 4/20

Dell Talk forums seam to have some serious issues with this drive which is highly likely to be a NEC 1100A. Apparently Dell is convinced that a firmware update will fix this problem. If not then I'm sure you can get Dell to replace the drive for an equivelent or better drive. Even if the drive is faulty I see this as still as a quite good deal. As Dell Customer Support is quite good and if you keep complaining to them they will eventually replace the drive if firmware doesn't fix the problems.

yep. thats whats keeping me from hopping on this deal. i want to know its the NEC or not. if it is, not interested. if its another, good deal. wonder if this is a typo on dell's end... under the specs it says this:
Supported Media Types: DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-Audio, CD-DA, CD-Extra, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, Video CD, CD Text

if this is accurate, that would make this a all format burner. but im guessing its a typo and they c+p it in there.

I guess it is for DVD reading ability

From glancing at the specs it looks like this only burns in dvd+r/+rw format. Is it accurate to assume that the dvd-r/-rw isn't supported for it's burning modes?

yeah, tommy pointed it out that its possible the specs are referencing that it can read those formats, but doesnt burn em'.

SO does it work fine with DVD+RW's. There is a sticky posted by dell mods about the problems with the drive. Dell Forums
