Pretty much every single major title released this past year supports 2048x1536. BF2, DOD:Source, D3, FEAR, COD2, SC:CT, Q4, Civ4, ...

Though I do agree with your last statement that a dual-gpu solution is pretty much a necessity at that resolution on some of those games with all the eye candy turned on. Maybe new single cards will change that in a few weeks.

It's low res considering the DPI of the screen when its on a 37 incher.
For example, 640x480 is extremely high res on a 2" screen. But on a 60" TV, it's really low res.

Not really, it depends on the viewing distance. You could have a 100' display use 640 X 480 and it would look fine, so long as you are a quarter mile away from it. It is only when you are very close that it would not be acceptable.

Everything is in proportion to your field of vision. So, really, resolution isn't a big deal unless you prefer the screen taking up most of your field of vision. For most people, they sit 10 feet away from even their 19"... However, I the type of person that likes to sit as close to the screen as possible! More immersive... In that situation, higher resolution is advised.

can you game on your Dell 30"? if you wanted to play a game, but knew that the video card couldn't push 2560x1600, could you play it "windowed" in a smaller 1280x1024 window (instead of stretched) so it would be like having a smaller monitor during your gaming session?

I have the Dell W3000, so the resolution of my display is 1280 X 768. I don't have the new one... But if I had the ability to purchase the new one, would I? No, and I have been down that road before for discussion. Essentially, everyone that thinks 1280 X 768 is too "low" is probably someone who doesn't have a a large display. Of course there is always the small few who have and still think it is too low.

Personally, 1280 X 768 has awed many of my gaming friends... It isn't as bad as people make it sound, in fact it is absolutely perfect for games. I surf the net, play EQ2 and Quake 4, Far Cry etc with a very pleasant gaming experience.

To answer your question though, yes you can scale down the image and have black bars everywhere, or can stretch the image with a lower resolution. Better yet, if you get do a custom resolution that is exactly 1/4th the native resolution, and you would have a nearly perfect scaled image.

To answer the OP, if I had a choice between the Dell 30" and the Westinghouse 37" (1920 X 1080) I'd go with the Westinghouse. People don't understand the cost of a high resolution display on performance the wallet... If you have plenty of funds, get the Dell, it will keep you upgrading for SLI and Quad SLI! 😀

very nice, but after tax and shipping, i'll prolly be facing $1800ish. $1600 is my absolute max. I will be using a VCR for a tuner (or a RF modulator)

I would definitely go with the 37", and just so you know, 1920x1080 resolution is a dream resolution. Don't let that hold you back. My friend wants to go with a tv that is less than $2000 and I was leaning towards the sharp over the westinghouse, but what's the deal with this picture shuttering, is there a workaround and it is a big deal?
 
Could somebody post a pic of their 37" showing Windows desktop at this 1920x1080 resolution? I want to see what text looks like.
 
I have the Westinghouse 37inch and it is nice for a great HDTV. I have my HTPC hooked up to it and DVDs look great, I have a MCE150 PVR card and I can watch satellite TV on it (via DVI from the computer). I do not like it for surfing and playing games, just does not seem as a tight image with gaming.

I do not have a console system, so I can not comment on that. However my HTPC eliminates the need of a TV / cable / satellite connection on the monitor.

Lot of talk comparing resolutions and connections. You have to realize the Dell 3007 is new and may have some issues (or not as some reviews are out). The Westy is at the tail end of its product life, the new 42 are slated. However, the panel in the Dell is superior to the Westy. Look at some of the specs, sure manufacturer may fudge, but if they both fudge . . .

I personally would not get either of them now, because of my above mentioned points. Also, the BB in Charleston had new in box Westinghouse (more than one, but not many more) for $1199 for anyone. Makes me think the brick and mortar BB are trying to move out a discontinued line.

FWIW, I bought mine about 8 months ago with 4 year warranty and tax for roughly $1750. Just my opinion.
 
I bought the 37" Westinghouse 2 weeks after the Xbox 360 came out and I just love it man. One of the big selling points for me was that it can do true 1080p over one of its DVI ports (it has two) with HDCP.

I stand somewhat correct. I went to BB yesterday and they have more Westies in stock for $1599. Are these the newest version? I dunno. I asked about their promo price of $1199 and received blank stares.

i cant seem to find 37" westinghouses on BB's website... am i blind? I'm in the market for one... What other 37" lcd's support 1080p?

And do what? play at 1 fps?? U can sit further away from it because iz bigger, and 1920x1080 is a good performance/quality for most games.
