Anyone running a Dell 2405fpw with high quality settings and getting good, playable frame rates?

Would you buy a 2405fpw again? or go with something smaller? Maybe a 2405fpw for work and a 2005fpw for play?

I'm building a system to use at home for photo/graphics editing, 3D Animation (Maya, 3DS Max), but I also like to game.

Assuming price is not a problem and CRT is NOT an option.

Putting up a Poll. Please explain why you chose what you chose.

I have a 2005FPW and not a 2405FPW, and it's hooked up to a 6800GT. I have serious doubts that any current (single) video card would push 1920x1200 well in newer games...hell, I even have framerates lower than I'd like sometimes at 1680x1050. However, if you wait for the R520 that's supposed to be out "soon" (within a few months), that could probably do it. :) Until newer games come out and 1920x1200 is a slideshow again :p (think Unreal Engine 3)

I don't have the 2405fpw but I do own a Sony CPD-FW900 24" CRT and run at 1920x1200 with two 6800GTs. Like SynthDude says, I don't think a single card (even the X850XT PE) can push that res with AA and AF cranked. I get framerate drops in HL2 at the aforementioned res and 2xAA and 16xAF. For the most part it is around 70-100, but can dip into the 20s at times when there is a lot of action, effects, etc. going on.

Hard to say. My 2405FPW arrives today, so I'll let you know in a few days :) Of course, I don't do much in the FPS world, which almost requires high frame rates. My gaming is limited to things like Splinter Cell, Dungeon Siege, and EverQuest 2, tho I do admit to playing Doom 3 every so often, just cause I like it :)

Well, I do have a 2405FPW, I'm running it with a X850XT. For the most part this video card is adequate (i.e. HL2 with the highest settings & 2xAA at full speed). So far I've tested the following games: HL2, WoW, Rome:Total war, and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, all with the highest settings.

I actually have more problem with games not supporting widescreen.

I have a 2405FPW, and a X850XT/PE. I have my drivers set to the highest quality, and most of the time, in-game settings set to the highest too. I get very good frames in all my games I play. Tribes: VE, HL2 DM, Trackmania: Sunrise, Call of Duty: United Offense, Brother in Arms, BF: Vietnam+PoE, and Pariah.

I normally only use 2x AA in multiplayer games, because unless I stop to look, I dont notice the difference when playing, vs. 4xAA. For single playe games, it varies what I use. Never less than 2xAA though, sometimes 4xAA. I use either 8xAF, or 16xAF, depending on the game as well.

I dont have any problems getting good frames.

Playing CSS on my 2405 is great. I see no ghosting and with 1920x 1200 with 2 x AA and 8X AF I get very acceptable frame rates 45 to 100+ ussually around 60ish This is of course with vsync off. If I have it on it dips down to 30 occasionally which results in my death haah. Having vsync off does result in tearing but I don't even notice it anymore and my game has improved.

I do NOT see any ghosting with this monitor at all.

So a single ati x850 can make games like half life 2, far cry, ut2004, and halo playable at its native resolution(1920x1200)!!! I thought only SLI could do it reliably

I guess everyone has a different opinion about "playable". My X800XT PE (within 2-3% of X850XT PE) would not run FarCry at 1600x1200 4AA/8AF at buttery smoothness. I'd also think Halo and possibly HL2 would not be buttery smooth at 1920x1200 4AA/8AF. But it is a fairly subjective thing.

No idea about the other games I play HL2 + CSS just fine with my 6800GT at that res. An X850 XT should be able to do an even better job.

1920x 1200 is really not that much more demanding than 1600x1200 in reality.

4X AA will kill my system while 2x is very playable.

Don't Dell LCD monitors have 1:1 mode where you can display a lower resolution without extrapolation? That is, if you play a smaller resolution like 1024x768, only 1024x768 pixels are used, leaving black borders around the image? This will not tax the video card so much and still provide you with a nice rendering and fast frame rates. I'm planning to get the 2405 to use its large real estate for Photoshopping and coding but use a smaller resolution in 1:1 mode for video games.

Yes you can do this. But seriously just try using a one of the lower resolutions on this monitor like 1680x1050. I bet you can't tell a difference in gaming at all. In terms of interpolation that is.
I have tried this and suffered no ill effects. I don't see why people have such a problem. They probably have never tried I would say.

So IMO the monitor looks great in games even at non native resolutions so it should be a non issue.
