When I reboot, the monitor goes into power save mode before the system starts displaying the bios msgs during restart. I'd like to find a way to keep the backlight from flicking off and on like that if possible.

Unfortunately, it is not possible from software. The only way would be to upload a firmware update to your monitor, if you know which code to modify.
