I'm impatiently waiting for the 2405 to go on sale. However, seeing that i'll be getting social security before that ever happens, the 20" dell lineup is looking pretty tempting. My brother just purchased the 2005fpw, so I finally got to see it in person. Overall, i was quite impressed, but I also have some critical issues with this lcd.
First off, my direct comparison is the Samsung 213T that i use at work. The CRT im replacing at home must be equal or better than the 213T, because...well...i'm spoiled 🙂
The most noticeable issue is the size. The 1.2 extra inches on the 213T is a super huge difference. The 213t could eat the 2005 for dinner, and still have room for dessert. All your life you try to convince yourself that 1.2 inches doesnt matter, then you realize it does :Q
The second issue is the viewing angle. Not in the typical sense of viewing from the side, but rather when you are dead center, about 2.5 feet away from the screen. It's hard to explain, but the angle seems too steep, and thus the whole pixel light isnt completely visible (turning black into a slight purple). Moving further back (in 3-3.5 and beyond range) solves the problem.
Even though i probably could get used to being further away from the screen than usual, I don't understand why this doesnt exist on the 213t.
And even more important, i hope it doesnt exist on the 2405, even though i will buy it anyways 😉

The purple tinge that you see is inherent in all S-IPS panels that the 2005FPWs use.. I'm not sure what the 213T uses, but compared to other panels, S-IPS has mostly better color reproduction (8-bit as opposed to 6-bit), a more uniform average pixel response time (thus closer to specified response time although still iffy) and some other advantage. The cons would be what you mentioned above, but probably insignificant to a lot of people (like myself).
I might be completely wrong since I last reviewed this a few months ago when I bought my NEC 1960NXi 😛

I did a search on jnmunsey only to find that its not surprising that hes as sharp as a bowling ball.
On a bright note, my 2005fpw is on its way 😀 😀.
I have a rev A02 manufactured in April 2005 and can happily say there is no backlighting problem.
However, unlike the 1905 this one does turn purplish/reddish when viewing the screen at an angle.
Then again, you work on the screen head-on so it's not an issue at all.
Also, the 2005 seems pre-calibrated from the factory unlike the 1905 where a lot of tweaking is involved.

Mine came yesterday. No dead pixels but it has a back lighting issue. I'm not sure what to do.

Yeah, same here... Mine is not as bad as the picture previously posted: http://home.comcast.net/~dissonant/dell2005fpw-resize.JPG However, I do not really ahve anyhting to compare mine to that is considered good or "perfect." Was wondering if someone could upload a picture of a good/"perfect" one for comparison. I also wonder about jjsole's comment, whether backlight issue will get better or worse over time (or not change much at all)?
Also, is it really true that when you send it back they do not replace it with a new one? Or is it that they do replace it with a new one but cannot garuntee it will be any better than the one you currently have? Just wondering because mine does not have any stuck or dead pixels, but the backlight seems to have an issue, got it in 3 corners and a bit in the 4th. I could probably post a picture of mine and let you all see, tell me what you think if you wanted.

I've been playing games on it for about 4 hours and I can't stand the backlighting. Its very distracting, I called Dell earlier for a replacement. Mine is an A02 April 2005.
So you have to send it back and wait for them to check it out and send another? Arrggg. I hope mine will be good to go.

Yeah, same here, games and movies... Guess that means I should probably try adn get started on figuring out how to get it replaced? Not too sure how that process starts, guess I gotta call them up? TheY said they will send me a new one in 2 buisness days and to return my defective one(paid by Dell).

Mine is going back too, 4 dead pixels to start and back lighting issues that I didn't notice before. I want a the best product with no defects I can buy, satisfaction is very important for me.

Soo uhhh, the returns request page that you have to fill out to get a replacement monitor sent to you (I assume oyu have to fill it out?) is not letting me fill it out, just keeps reloading the page when I click the submit button, suck! Guess I shall try later, if no luck, guess I can pick one of them random 1-800 numbers from their site and see what happens.

Every LCD had backlighting, that is not the problem. The problem is that in some cases, there is bleedthrough from the backlighting which is visible on the screen when you have a dark imagine on it. A few posts up I reposted a link to a picture of a monitor which has some pretty bad backlight bleedthrough. I also think a few posts up someone posted a monitor testing utility; it gives you a black screen so you can look for the backlighting issue as well as numerous colored screen to check for stuck/dead pixels (i assume that is what those are for). Please do correct me if I am wrong about any of the above, I do not want to be giving out wrong information.
