Dell 2001fp question: what is the included USB cable for?

I got my new Dell 2001fp. What is the usb cable to connect to my computer for?

it says it connects the computer to the monitor's USB upstream port but for what purpose I don't know. Never had to connect a monitor to a computer by usb before.

It lets you plug things into the USB ports on the monitor, I'd assume. 😛

yes but to upstream what to the monitor?

Riddle me this - if you plug a USB device into one of the monitor's ports, how does the USB data get back to the computer? 😉

i get it now, the upstream usb transfers data between the monitor the computer and the downstream is data transfer between the monitor and whatever usb peripherals you attach to the monitor.

Exactly. The monitor has a built-in USB hub. It's damn handy for stuff like USB key drives and stuff; beats fiddling around with back USB ports and is often even more convenient than front USB ports even.

Just your average USB hub, built in to the monitor. For reduced desk clutter (and stopping the cable weight from pulling your mouse off the desk), plug your keyboard and mouse there.
