Dell 1905FP

i need to buy a 19" LCD in the next few days, but i need some info first:

> is the 1905 a true 24bit screen?

> is the 20ms response going to cause noticeable motion blur in any but the fastest games?

> are the blacks black?

> is the backlight even or blotchy?

cheers

You might want to do a search on 1905, it will return a few hits but not a whole lot.

Regarding the monitor in general, I just ordered one myself - awaiting delevery. From what I've learned so far:

- 20ms response rate rating (ratings are not very meaningful but better than nothing). General consenses is that this monitor is generally ok for gamming as long as you are not too sensitive to ghosting.

- Color reproduction, contrast ratio, and wide viewing angles are the monitors halmarks.

- Panel manufactuered by Liteon.

- Native resolution is 1280x1024. This will result in fairly large text size, compared to 17" and 20" TFT's, which is benificical for those of us with aging eyes😛

Dell documentation.

PC World review.

Good luck.

cheers.

i'm glad about the contrast and colour reproduction.

the point about aging eyes is important, as i intend it for my father who has poor eyesight, yet whom i intend to introduce to strategy games (M:TW, R:TW), so is 20ms quick enough to deal with these games without visible ghosting?

cheers

I can post back in a few days after my monitor comes but from what understand, slower paced games should be ok. Again though, this is not a gamming monitor as I understand it.

From what I understand, fast panels give up viewing angles and contrast ratios. Just the nature of the beast right now technology wise. The panel that seems to come the closes to having it all is the Samsung 193V, only it's about 50% more expensive that the Dell (assuming you cash in on the Dell coupon craze).

Good luck.

cheers.

i'm looking at the Benq 937s atm.

i think it has full 24bit colour.
it has a 12ms response.
and reasonable contrast and brightness.

i'm just worried that it is another 18bit that calls itself a 24bit because of some dodgy dithering.

Have the 1905fp for a week now. Took a lot of time to tweak it to my likes, but I do like it. A bit ghosty in NFSU2, less so in HL2, but a tiny bit noticeable. Non existent in other games.
Color and black levels are SUPERB. This is a VERY bright monitor and very sharp. Will have to tweak it for sure. Image quality is excellent (text, photos, browsing).
Ruuning mine off DVI-9800 Pro.

Also was int. in the fp937s, but no one had it in stock for decent price. I wound up paying $430 delivered for the 1905 (405+ tax). Got 3 of them thru work where I got the good deal.

cheers ,thanks for the info.

i'm still stuck between the FP937s and the 1905fp.

there is also a new 8ms Hyundai model, but i'm presuming it must be an 18bit dithered TFT due to the very fast response, and it does cost another £50 more.....

I just ordered a 1905FP Ultrasharp 3 days ago.... am I going to regret it just because it has a little ghosting issues?😱

Well, u cn let us know after you get it set up and tweaked.

If connecting using DVI, then you need to adust the Gamma, Birghtness and contrast in the Video Card drivers (windows display properties, advanced settings).
On the 1905fp, start adjusting the gamme, brightness and contrast DOWN.

I have the 1905 and have gamed alot on it. The monitor is awesome and i didn't notice any ghosting until HL2. It's there, but as someone said, if you're not sensitive to it, you really don't even notice it. If i never heard of 'ghosting' i probably would not have given it a second thought. Other than HL2, i havent' had any issues in any other games, including RTW.

Anybody else have any more information about the Dell 1905FP. I need to know if the colours and bright clean and crisp. The Benq FP951 had a washy/cloudy look to it that wasn't very pleasant, so I returned it. The problem with the 1905 is that I can't see it before I buy it, and if I want to return it there is a 15% restocking fee.

Also, if I get stuck pixels, can I exchange no questions asked?

thanks,

1st off, you can return the 1905fp to dell within 30 days for ANY reason. never heard of the 15% fee.
2nd, the 1905fp is best known for it's EXCELLENT black levels and vivid colors. Those are 2 of it's strongest points. Sharp, rich vivid colors are where this excels.
No stuck pixels on mine.

My 1905 arrived last night and I'm using it right now. Some first impressions: color, brightness, image sharpness are all excellent. Ergonomics are excellent as well; stand rotates, tilts, switches between portrait and landscape easily, ect. No stuck pixles or backlight leakage which is nice as well.

I'm not much of a gammer so I can't give much of an impression there yet. Ran Futuremark demos and they looked amazing; color depth is remarkable compared to my older Dell Trinatron tubed CRT.

I'll force myself to try some fps games later today and I'll post back then.

Lastly, I LOVE the text size compared to that on a 17" or 20 TFT which is too small for me. 19" at 1280x1024 looks just right in my opinion.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. $460 shipped with Defl coupons and sales tax (for CA). Not too many monitors available in this price range with this feature set.

Ed😀

Please post some FPS impressions asap 🙂 I have a 1905FP on order, but still have time to cancel, and am in the middle of building a new machine that I intend to do some heavy FPS on...if there's noticable ghosting issues, I'll have to cancel and rethink my monitor choice!

(Yes I'm aware an LCD isn't the ideal gaming monitor, but it would be really nice to have as long as the ghosting isn't too terrible)

Evan

Well, I'll understand if you're not a professional reviewer, but I'd like some personal opinions on the ghosting in any game you care to mention, please! Really trying to decide if I should cancel my order and find something else or not...

thanks,

Well, let me add some comments since I just got a Dell 1905FP (19") as an 'upgrade' from an NEC 1760nx (17").

To start with, I only just decided to keep it after a couple days. The size increase and ability to 'tilt' the monitor 90 degrees is what finally convinced me (I do a LOT of documentation work). The image quality is inferior in every way to the 1760nx, though.

First off, the colors are SERIOUSLY washed out. The poster that said to "start off by adjusting the gamma, brightness and constrast DOWN" was NOT kidding. If you just plug it in and run with it, it looks like crap. I mean, it's HIDEOUS. The color reproduction is AWFUL. I've tinkered with it some, and it's okay with my desktop and games now, but I still can't get it right for movies. It's very definitely a 16-bit dithered up to 24-bit, no question about it. And while the NEC 1760nx was the same (16-bit dithered up to 24-bit), it looked GOOD. This does NOT. If ANYONE has a suggested profile that works, and tested out with ColorSpyder or something - PLEASE tell me what to use! I'm really irritated by this at the moment!!

As to ghosting - believe it or not, I did not mind it much in games on this monitor. Granted, I MOSTLY play flight sims where a moderate amount of ghosting actually improves the image. In shooters, it's....definitely noticeable, but not awful. For example, in Tribes - where there is a green or red triangle over everyone's head to indicate which side they are on - that triangle you will see 'double' - a very light ghosted version of it trailing the vividly bright one by a small amount. Again, vastly inferior to the NEC 1760nx, which has NO ghosting (a very pessimistic 16ms monitor - they could probably sell it as a 12ms monitor, it's *gorgeous*)

As to Dell's customer service....well, it's awesome, actually. I have two "stuck" pixels, and called to complain about it. The customer rep said that 2-3 stuck pixels is "within their quality control parameters", so he has no way of guaranteeing if the replacement will have any....but they ARE still sending me a replacement. In fact, they are sending me one right now while I'm still using this one. Once I get the replacement, I will take the included shipping label out and stick it on the box, put my old monitor in the box, and send it back - Dell pays for the shipping back to them, and I'm never without a monitor. This isn't any "advanced replacement" or anything where they charge my card or whatnot - this is just their *standard* way of issuing replacements. Gotta say, I LIKE that.
