Delimma.... Build New PC, Buy a Dell or save and get a laptop

In a matter of a week or two the computer I use at work is being taken to California with my boss when he transfers.
I need a new computer to replace the one that is leaving.
I have 3 options, Build myself a new one. Buy the cheapest refurb Dell/HP/ETC I can find. Or go without for a couple of weeks and get an inexpensive laptop ($400-550).

What would you do?

Edit: I want to thank all of you who took the time and actualy read my post and respond with something useful.
For those of you who saw it fit to poke fun at the one misspelled word in the entire fvcking post FVCK YOU.
Like you have never misspelled anything your entire fvcking lives?
Get over yourselves.
If you can't find the time to be helpful or nef politely DON'T FVCKING POST IN MY GDDAMN THREAD! :|

I think you should just build your self a $500 system. BTW a $500 system can be quite good, what are your needs exactally? You might even want to build a Pentium III based system for under $300 if all your doing is word processing/spreadsheets. Essentially just build a system that will suit your needs at work and nothing more (no P4 3.4GHZ systems :roll😉. Unless your doing graphics/video editing, the cheapo option is a good one and be sure to get a fast HDD otherwise you will feel the slowness.

Look asstard, fvck off. It is that simple, if you dont have anything to contribute at least nef politely.
Thank you Mod

Now, as for what I will be doing with the PC, Mostly terminal emulation. With a helping of large Excel spreadsheats and some Access thrown in for good measure.
Building my own and buying a Dell are similar in cost (about $300)
The main reason I would want to buy a laptop would give me the flexibilty to take it home so other people couldnt use it, and I could take it with me when I travel on business or go on vacation.

P.Mango, as far as getting a PIII its out of the question. They are too slow for the Excel and Access usage that I need.

Get a Dell when they put one of their 3ghz systems with a 17 LCD on sale for$500 or so. If you already have a monitor then build yourself a system.

If you can get by with a desktop, then forget about the laptop. Too expensive to purchase, and upgrade.

Forget about building one as well. REALLY ain't worth it. All these clowns will tell you to build one, but you won't hear a peep out of them when it comes up short. I promise you that! Far more bang for the buck with a Dell or HP hot deal, and a helluva lot quieter!

If you build your own PC and legally procure all the necessary software (to include operating system) it will end up costing you at least as much as whatever package Dell has set up. Also you wouldn't have a warranty on the system as a whole but I doubt that will matter to much to you and it'll probably be as loud as a jet engine taking off 🙂.

The big x-factor is the feeling of satisfaction you'll get from having pieced together your own system...not to mention the e-penis benefits 😉

[Edit] Why do you have to wait to get a laptop?

Honestly, I only came into this thread to tell you how horrified I am at the atrocious misspelling of dilemma.

What sort of things do you need to do with your computer? Is portability necessary? If this a work computer, why isn't your employer replacing the computer?
