Deleted The Internet

I reinstalled WinXP after I had some problems, and everything works ok, but I cannot get my internet connection up. I've tried directly from modem, and from router. It works on this computer which is 30 ft. away. All the connection tabs settings are the same in firefox/Iexplore. I am not really smart when it comes to this though, so there are probably things I havent checked. Do I need to get the CD that the modem belongs to? When I bought the comp it worked fine just plugging it in, didn't need to install anything. Any suggestions?

When I go into network connections, it says 1394 Connected

But in details, there is no info on IP address or DNS or anything. When I click repair, it says cannot query TCP/IP address. Any thing I can do?

sorry, couldn't help myself.

Your network card is not installed, hence you don't have an interface. The 1394 is "firewire" networking, and not applicable. Go into Device Manager, find your network card, and install the drivers. You should then have a "local area connection"

OR if it's a store bought PC, go to the manufacturer's website, put in your model/serial number info and such and search to find the appropriate network card driver for your system.

That "1394 connection" is Firewire. Are there any other connections listed? Specifically, anything named "Local area connection"? If not, then the drivers for the network adapter are probably not installed properly and you will need to install the drivers before you can access the Internet.

Edit: Interesting. The thread was showing no replies when I typed this, but I see that nweaver already gave the same answer, so just pretend that I'm not here. :)

so...I'd go to Acer.com and search for drivers for the network card I have? Is there anyway to find out what card I have without searching through the actual computer, cause I don't know where that is.

And when I d/led the drivers, would I burn it onto a disk and then use it on the comp?

EDIT: WHen I enter serial number, all it tells me is my warranty info and very basics, no network car dinfo.

Log to the support site of Acer look for your model and you would find drivers for you computer.

The might be separate drivers for the Network card, or id it is NVIDIA chipset it would be part of the chipset drivers.

When you mange to install the Network pleas log to the Internet and Undelete it otherwise the world commerce would come to an end.;)

Yap, or you can use a flash drive.

If it is zipped do not forget to UnZip it before you burn it or svae to a Flash drive.

SO I d/led and burned the LAN drivers, there was only one executable out of 4 folders so it installed something, WLAN, but its not wireless, so that was not the right thing?

I'm downloading the chipset drivers now to see if it works?

Is the NIC on the mobo? If so, then the chipset drivers are what you are looking for. Thus far on all the machines I've built, the chipset driver set has the drivers for the integrated NIC.

I dont know. But I used te chipset drivers and no other connection came up. There were 4 options to install, display, ethernet and SMBUS and something to change storage to IDESATARAID Nvidia or something, I unchecked that. Should I install that? It sounds like it wouldnt have an effect on what I'm trying to do.

Is there anything sort of basic that I could do, because I dont really know all that much about this, and I could of missed some sort of simple step that you guys knowing about this assumed us idiots would know

Under network adapters, there is no card just teh 1394 Firewire thing.

EDIT: When I plug in the ethernet cable in the slot in the back of comp, there is no light turning on, orange or green. Should this be happening in my situation or is that a signal of something else wrong

Also I use Comcast cable internet if that helps, not dial up.

OH NO >...

Ok, you need to install/reinstall the ethernet drivers. If you are seeing in the device manager about a communication that has problems, try uninstalling it out of the device manager, and then hit the computer with the magnify glass( should be at the top of the toolbar ), it will search your computer for new hardware. This should help ya.

PS, call Comcast and tell them you want a refund.. hahahah, my internet isnt working.. :D

Ethernet controller and PCI device are both yellow and say they are not working. so I uninstall those? then search for more? and that should work?

So I have the prompt found new hardware ethernet controller, should I then put in the CD for chipset then?

There is still nothing else under network adapter but 1394, and ethernet controller and PCI device still have a yellow question mark with an exclamation point through them. I apparently need drivers for them, but I have the chipset and LAN drivers and neither work. I search of google for acer aspire network card drivers and ethernet card drivers, but I never can find my model, Acer Aspire t180.

Wait could I just buy a new network adapter for like 30$ and just replace it and it would work fine and I could connect to the net?

really, the best option is just to fix yours. Is your network card on the motherboard, or is it an add in card?

uhm, I think its integrated, I'll check. But would the network adapter think work? Just put it in a PCI slot?

Well, in dev manager, it says problem with PCI Device, and problem with ethernet card. So I assume its in the PCI slot. Also there is something in the PCI slot thats screwed in, so I assume it is the network card.

The new boards sometimes would have a PCI device that would not install and its absense is No impeding the functionality of the computer.

The Ghost (yellow marker) that says Ethernet controller is the none installed on board Network Card.

You have to uninstall/delete the Ghost before each attempt to reinstall it.

Run the all drivers package again check the display, ethernet and SMBUS, and uncheck the RAID if you do not know/want to use it.

If during the running of the chipset setup it asks you if you want to install some network/firewall/security management software skip it.

No change that I can see. Deleted it before I ran chipset setup, got through that, restarted, still only the 1394 connection, and still nothing else new in device manager. It didn't ask me to install anything firewallish.

Out of curiosity, do you have your machine overclocked? And if so, how much are you OCing the FSB?

Not overclocked, unless it came like it, haven,t messed with anything like that.

I've researched a bit and saw several other threads on diff forums about the exact same problem, and none of them had a solution.

So if I just bought a new ethernet card and replaced this one, it would work supposedly?

Okay, try this. Turn off you computer, unplug the network cable, and then remove the power cable to the power supply. Count to 10 or so, then plug in the power cable, then the network cable. Power up the computer again.

Sounds crazy, but I had this problem with my machine, and I could not figure it out. I tried that and it worked perfectly. I also recommended this to two other people since then, and it worked for them as well.

Yea I do that every now and then when the internet goes out on this comp. But there is no internet connection at all, all I have is the 1394, no LAN or internet connection.
