let's say the failure rate on the 75GXP's are 2%. let's also say that IBM shipped out 2 million 75GXP's. That would mean that 1.996 million of those drives are perfectly fine......which apparently your drives are....but it still doesn't take away from the fact that 40,000 drives went bad.....that's an AWFUL lot of bad drives in the channel....it's almost unacceptable, considering most hard drive manufacturers spec their drives to go 150,000 hours between failure (that's over 17 years of operation for those of you keeping score at home). to say that "my hard drive is good and therefore the whole issue of bad IBM drives is hogwash" is downright silly

EDIT: I also have an IBM drive as my main drive....and it's run like a champ for almost 2 years now....but after hearing all this, every time i hear a weird noise from my hard drive, i get a little worried....and i'm pretty sure that i won't be buying any more IBM drives for my customers or for myself

What's the usual failure rate within the warranty period? I though it was 3%? Or am I way off and it's nearer 1%?

I certainly don't believe the "yeah my local ISP had 100 drives and 50% failed" business that's been floating around the net.

And how many of these drives are in hot, overclocked systems. I've had several Maxtors fail on me (incl. 1 in just a couple of hours of usage), but a couple were in overclocked systems so I don't really blame Maxtor for those.

I wouldn't be completely surprised if in fact these drives do have a higher RMA rate, but so far we have no real data supporting this supposition.

My car has been running perfectly for the last 12 months - not a single problem. Does this mean it wont fail in the future...no.

This is a stupid thread. If you drive is running perfectly good for you - unfortunately many, many people (myself included) have been hit by bad 75GXP drives.

Edit : Spelling

Same could be said that, just because yours failed, doesn't mean mine will too. Furthermore, anything can fail at one point or another. Doesn't matter if it's a maxtor, ibm, or toyota.

You could also say it's stupid for someone to post that their IBM HD failed since everything can fail.
