Doom 3 = 60fps or so
HL2 around 70-100 depending on your settings. I had a BFG6800OC for a while and played both games with ease. Not sure about the quality of PNY, although I haven't heard good things about their cards.

that oc on the core is monster though. it is a very hard choice. it would befro me if i were in the hunt for a 6800.

but considering him unlocking his pipe to 16
his core and mem clock are beyond the speed on an utlra (400/600 or 700)...something like that
so i think his is better than a 6800 gt or and ultra

you got that wrong. the emem speed on a
ultra is 600mhz,1200mhz effective DDR.
GT is 1100mhz, 550mhzddr
his is 400mhz, 800 effective ddr

it's still a great oc. most 6800ultras would struggle getting 500 on the core without some heavy watercooling or phase change.

Uhh...the clock on a 6800GT is 350 core/500 memory(1000 effective)

You will be pretty close to 6800gt speeds with that card. But I'd worry about how stable it will be since it's rare the core will go that high. I've seen memory on these cards easily get up to 900.

Here's some benchmarks. Take a look at the 6800 and 6800gt- you'll be between there somewhere, most likely closer to the GT:

Yup and the Ultra is 550 Mhz (1100 MHz effective) if I remember correctly. The ultra-rare (only 100 units produced) Ultra Extreme was the one with 1200 MHz memory.

thanks for all the info so far guys, really helps! Keep it comming....

Also to note, the tom's hardware reviews are using stock settings, how much better do you think my card will preform with the unlocked pipes and the oc memory and core?

also im using a 3700+ amd chip. Dunno how much it will help..

I had an evga 6800 and it would do 420/875 16/6 with no artifacts. (NV5 installed)
500mhz would be a HUGE overclock for that card. I don't know how you think it's gonna do 500mhz...without some extreme cooling...they are good cards though. Mine got 12.5k in 3dmark 03' and about 5k in 05'(420/875 16/6). Played everything very nice for the $$ spent. Just don't expect it to do 500mhz...;)

In most games @ 1024x768 with some AA/AF you will notice almost no difference between that card(oc'ed and unlocked) and a GT. Might actually be faster than a GT at that point assuming the GT is @ stock.;) The slower 128mb GDDR would be the limiting factor. Also just in case you were thinking about a pci-e version, I don't think they'll unlock.

Boy, now I can't wait to get my eVGA 6800 in the mail this week to go with the NV5 silencer cooler to put on it. Here's hoping that I can unlock mine successfully! :D

If you google for unlocked 6800 or something, there is a site that has a review of a 6800 they unlocked (but i don't think OC'ed). You can check yourself, but basically the extra pipes & vertex put it half way between a stock 6800nu and a full 6800GT. With your card OC'd like that, I'd say you would be at GT levels until you crank up the res or AA. Then the GT would pull ahead. But also consider a GT OC's easily to Ultra and beyond. Depending how much you're spending, a used/refurb GT would be ideal. GT's are getting cheap in FS/FT and NewEgg had a Ledtek refurb for $221 shipped a couple weeks ago. Probly gone now

ya i figured gt, but for the extra $70-90 bucks i would just get a 6800, i dont game as hevily as i used to, so just enough to run doom3, hl2 and older games is fine.

pny is bad.

PNY is just as good as the next manufacturer. I actually use them, you do not.

agreed. PNY actually don't even manufacture any of these boards. They buy reference boards from OEMs, probably from MSI.

PNYs usualy is a really good deal, just don't expect them to be above in overclocking. My last card was a PNY 6800GT and its memory got bitchy after a few months and wouldnt overclock at all. I expect my new card to do the same eventualy, typical behavious for a card that hasnt labled itself a "Golden Sample" or whatnot.
