P4's are known to be quicker for opening programs, opening files, feels quite clean and crisp.

Is that a hyperthreaded P4?

What hard drives are you running?

I think even an Intel rep said in an Interview and I'll try and find the soures later " Whats more important ? opening files quicker or mulit tasking", so you could say he conceds that athlon 64's are faster on the desktop, nothing to lose sleep over.

If you ask ten people, you'll probably get 5 saying AMD is more responsive and 5 saying Intel is. 😀

I dont game, but Id like a more repsonsive box, open prgrams faster, no lagging when combining rar files, photoshop, mp3 encoding etc

Sounds like a tailor made request for a Hyperthreaded P4 processor, or wait for the dual cores from AMD. 😀

Instead of switching CPU, get 18k RPM SCSI HDDs and run them in RAID. If you don't want SCSI, get WD Raptor. Then you will see the difference.

Edit: I saw your reply about you sold Raptor after leaving this reply lol. Anyway, I doubt the difference is identical.

had a scsi drive 15k cheetah (boot time too slow) and they were really not that much better for the price for home boxes in my opinion

had a 36gb raptor, 74gb raptor they boot really fast but still not worth the cost to performance ratio

Then so does switching CPU. Actaully, I think getting Raptor would have been better cost/perf ratio than switching CPU.

hey,i suggest the no cash way, defrag hard drives and get a program called tuen up utilities and use it to fix some things on your comp make sure no adware/spyware?

I agree with Dough1397. Unless you're Donald Trump, upgrading from a P4 3.6GHz to a comparable AMD64 would be as senseless as replacing your current CPU with an identical one (along with a new motherboard, I might add). Just get a shitload of RAM.

But then again, you use a 3.6GHz P4 for "download" purposes. A 15K SCSI drive is too slow? I don't think I'm going to talk to you anymore. Since you seem to like jumping around with expensive parts (like your Raptors), I see no problem with 'upgrading' to an AMD64. In fact, I think you should buy two, one on yellow and one on green PCB, so you can switch when your mind changes again.

was that really neccesary?? geez man I was only asking opinions

moderators you can now clsoe this thread

since it has know gone ridculous and obviously personal

I didnt know I needed to be donald trump to like computer technology as a hobby

No worries! Yes, I will never attempt to be sarcastic again. Remember that nothing said online should ever be taken personal, because the other person probably doesn't take it personally.

Still, switching from CPU to CPU like that is quiet expensive, especially for a hobbyist.

My advice still stands: get tons of RAM.

hehe i dont mean to be rude or anything, and i also do believe in not takign offence to posts or anything cause i most likely wont see you in real life but w/e

on to what i was gonna say

to mr "amd4life" how is your intel?

heheh sorry man just messing with ya

aight hands down if you got any spyware or stuff get rid of that, both my pIII's work nicely and snappy ones only slower cause of the hard drive.... but its old 4+ years most likely, a drive <2 years old will be great with a defrag (it takes long if you dont do it often, but if you dotn do it often it makes a world of difference!)

but hey at the end of the day you were asking for our opinion and knowledge, which indeed can be personal..... do what you think is best!

BTW my hundreth post you should be honoured its in your thread 😀 hehe
