saying that che was a bad guy or dumping him in with hitler or something is wrong in my opinion, he had basic social beliefs and a passion for the disadvantaged which he fought and died for; this is a guy who time magazine recently put into the same category as the kennedys, mother teresa & other notable folks.

The "poor and disadvantaged" of Bolivia whom he was supposedly fighting for were the ones who reported his location in the mountains directly to the Bolivian military, resulting in his capture. The "poor and disadvantaged" of Bolivia had nothing in common with Che, and wanted nothing to do with his fight to overthrow their government and start a "world revolution".

The real reason Che was in Bolivia, was to overthrow the government and in its place build a new nation loyal to Cuba - a mission which even the Communist party in Bolivia refused to support. This new nation would have replaced the Soviet Union, as a partner to Cuba which she could rely on for trade, raw materials, military support etc. Had Che been successful in building a self-reliant socialist economy in Cuba, there would be no reason for him to be in Bolivia in the first place.

Che persists as a hippie rebal icon, supposedly because he was the ideological foundation on which Castro's regime was built. But in the end even Castro betrayed Che, making his return from Bolivia to Cuba impossible, and leaving Che to fend for himself at the hands of the Bolivian army.
