yea but i don't know how well that would interact with the components, plus it rubs off AND would take a long time. i read the forums and it mentioned that insta-rust paint http://www.modernoptions.com/ but im wondering if anyones ever used this and if it would rub off at all on plastic materials. or if there'd be a good way to prep the metal or plastic on the case before applying this paint or any other paint..

Give it an acid wash... Pool acid should do the trick... If you have a steel case, it should open up the pores of the metal enough to let rust get a better hold. Of course, leave the case outside for a while after that and it should rust in short order... Once you've done that, get some rust stopping compounds and use that to halt the progress... Give it some good coats of clear and it shouldn't rub off onto other parts...

Of course, you could go and look up how to make something new look like an antique... A quick google search only came up with 1,330,000 hits there... happy reading...

actually im "insta rusting" a case right now, there are two components to the insta rust the metallic acrylic paint, basically tiny fragments of iron in the dark grey acrylic paint and then there is the rust liquid which is then brushed on after you coat the metal. I tried at first just using the insta rust liquid and it started to build a little rust but more than anything just oxidized it with no rust. After applying the insta rust on top of a layer of the metallic paint bam 2 hours and I had rust forming. Now the only problem im having is that on the top where i left the original paint its forming extremley good, however on the bare metal even after two coast of the metallic paint its still barely forming. My suggestion would be to coat the entire case with a layer of primer, probably just a quick spray of krylon would work fine then paint on the metallic paint then let dry and your would have some good rust formation.

As for it flaking off, well its very very minute rust almost like just a layer of powder rust forming not deep into the metal like it would naturally so yes it will come off just by rubbing your finger across it but not all of. What I would do and plan on doing is after the rust is formed to my liking im going to spray it all down with a sealer and clear coat to get everything sealed in..

Ill post some pics sometime tomorrow to show you how its progressing..

Well for any mod I'd usually start with the front bezel, then the side panels, and finally the chassis itself. My 1.5 cents.

that would be great, b/c like i said im not great at modding only thing ive ever done was a window im kinda a basic kinda guy but i just love the rust effect and since my case shields the front of the drive bays i don't really need to paint them as they'll be covered. :D looking forward to seeing some pics
