delete me.

You know what you are pretty much looking for. Go on newegg, and setup some shopping lists. Print them out, and compare them. My suggestions: don't OC, as this is a work machine, not a game machine. No need to OC, and stability is far more important. Mobos: get something from Tyan (if you go AMD) or Supermicro (if you go Intel). Get ECC memory.

Also, make a list of software that you will be running, and find out what hardware these programs can be optimized for.

EDIT: Oh, and about processor, I'd go with a dual core Opteron.

single.... or dual? Yeah i am in the process of building some lists. just want some feedback. Ok... no ocing... maybe just a little bit? j/k. it is tough not to o/c after seeing what is capable.

Yeah, dual-core Opteron or maybe just an Athlon X2 would do you fine.
2Gb+ RAM.
Big storage drive- depends on how many RAW images you need to store. 200Gb+ would be advisable. If you really want a fast machine, look into a cheap U160 PCI SCSI card and a 15krpm SCSI drive. Some Opteron boards will come with SCSI onboard, Tyan are worth looking at.

However, you're not going to get desktop features on a server/workstation board. You'll lose overclocking (although, as has been said, this is a bad idea for a work machine), and you may not get things like onboard sound.

Is there really that much of a difference though when rasterizing a movie from an OCed proc to a non-OCed proc? Games, sure, you get more FPS, etc. But for a work machine, it's not worth the hassle. I'd go with a dual opteron system on a tyan mobo... Pretty much the same thing I put in this thread. I have no idea what your budget is though. And I would add a good solid video card in there, after checking to see what video cards worked well with the software that you plan on using.

 Good advice from a metallic bird.

You may save a few seconds here and there by overclocking, but if you need a few seconds here and there then you need to relax a little 😉

does anyone here know anyone who has built a workstation with the following.

Tyan K8WE or Tyan K8SE or Tyan K8SRE (the differences here pci-ex variations)
2 Dual Core Opteron 265, 270, 275 (varying clock)

With the K8WE i get SLI. Don't know if i need it would be nice for the future.

You're just asking for this thread to turn into a total joke. It seems almost deliberate.

You're being entirely too vague.

No budget? Well, I'm sure plenty people can come up with systems that top $10,000 without the monitor. Not having a budget doesn't keep you from getting sub-par gear. It just brings the freaks out of the woodwork to tell you that you absolutely MUST get a water-cooled system with over $1000 in video cards.

You're a Mac guy, but you the only Mac you've ever had is an iBook that you just bought? That doesn't make you a "Mac guy" at all.

You want the ability to game? A $20 video card will give you the ability to game. If you leave it open-ended most people will start suggesting dual $600 leaf-blowers in your system which is totally ridiculous for a workstation when you are only mildly interested in gaming.

Compiling Gentoo was slow on your Athlon XP? Athlon XPs went from the Palomino 1500+ (1.33 GHz, 256K cache, DDR266) to the Barton 3200+ (2.2 GHz, 512K cache, DDR400), so that doesn't really say much. A single $70 Sempron 64 may very well be a major improvement for you.

Soon you will get into movie making? Well, if you're going to be doing NLE, that's important to know. This is a place to blow money, since you would benefit from a good RAID setup.

well... you obviously don't read tostada as a said "mac guy" "SORTA". I didn't say I love macs there are the best computers ever, oh by the way I have only owned an ibook. It is freaks like you that come out of the woodwork. I asked about Processors.... nothing else. nothing about a video card or anything else. So maybe you need to go back to reading class and read the "comprehending what someone is trying to express" section.

I asked about processor platforms gave some things i have seen and asked for opinions. I want it to be open. If it bugs you that much don't repsond just go and snicker in your little corner and feel good because you have some many pointless things to say to me besides something helpful. thanks. thanks a lot buddy.

What kind of a monitor setup are you talking about? Seems like if you're doing that much serious work, you might want more than two monitors (or else two huge monitors that require dual-link DVI). In that case, you would probably be better off getting something with two PCI-E x16 slots like the DFI Ultra-D.

Unless you are planning on getting a PCI-X controller of some kind, I woudln't worry about it. PCI-e 1X and 4X would be far more useful. And I would be more interested in PCIe 4X for future cards, etc.

Sorry. I didn't realize you were a total idiot. This post of yours doesn't even make sense. Now you're claiming that all you asked about was CPUs, even though you went into a whole lot more than that -- you're even asking about specific server motherboards! Yet you're telling me that I can't read? You can't even comprehend what you just typed.

If all you want is a CPU recommendation, and you have no budget, then you need to get two Opteron 280s. End of discussion. Go spend $2,650 on your CPUs. You won't find anything better.

So you still haven't figured out how ridiculous it is just to ask for a CPU recommendation with no budget?

Now you're just going to pout?

It's a shame you have to kill the thread. I thought it was a decently interesting conversation, up until the thread had to get crapped on.

You might do a little reading at http://www.2cpu.com/

I do not need a dualie but would consider building one from used or old stock parts.
Just for the exercise and fun of it. Stupid?...Maybe. Fun?...Yes.

I've been reading some of the threads at the above site and they seem to be a civil board.

I thought it was decently interesting up until he got totally bent out of shape because I mentioned some things he should clarify ... then he started editing his posts to change everything he said ... then he deleted them. 🙂

I also think it's interesting that a guy who bought his laptop used on eBay a couple months ago to save a few bucks now has absolutely no budget whatsoever. It's a shame we won't get an explanation on that one.

Lay off. He doesn't have a budget, because he is getting the stuff in the future--he is doing his research now. Not everyone decides what to get with the money they have. I did the same thing he is doing--decide what parts I want, and then get them. Quit thread crapping.

How can you crap on a thread titled "delete me"?

Besides, it's not crapping. I told him the best CPU to get. I guess I pretty much told him the same thing you told him. Dual or quad Opterons.

He's the one who started ranting that he didn't want any comments except CPU recommendations, so really everybody's doing off-topic thread crapping here.
