I have a ton of allergies, and I was wondering if, before I went out and bought an expensive dehumidifier, anyone knew how to make a homemade one out of EASY TO FIND parts.

I can't answer your question, but I can recommend using a Sonic Breeze dehumidifier from Sharper Image. My mom has lots of allergies and it has helped her tremendously.

I'd recommend a HEPA-based air cleaner, the Honeywell units work well. As for dehumidifiers, most any model will work well enough. One thing to look for on any unit is a built-in self-defrosting coil. Are you especially allergic to molds? (reason for dehumidifer?)

yeah it's simple to make. Just take a bowl and empty out all the little "Do Not Eat" packets from your imported electrical goods. That's silica gel, and it absorbs water from the air.

hehe ... you're probably looking for something a little more effective. Sorry I can't be of more help. Did you try searching on google for some plans? If I wasn't feeling lazy right now I'd search and link it for ya.

If it's your own house get a humidex or humidistat installed. These are more expensive than dehumidifiers but they use less energy and are more efficient. Also get a HEPA filter.

Depending on your allergies, a dehumidifier may or may not help at all. If you have airborn allergies, I'd recommend the sonic breeze (or whichever the one is that uses ion technology). They're supposed to be really good.
