I operate under Windows 98 at the moment.

PII-450
Adaptect Scsi Utra
Seagate Cheetah 10k rpm 8gig
Geo 3
Ultraplex CD rom
Creative Live
Zone Alarm Pro
etc......

I shut down everything but Systray and ZoneAlarm and it has taken 6 hours just to defrag 25% of the drive and its crawling. I'm dying here.

Anyone? Please help before I lose my mind.

Thanks guys,

Terrapin

Boot to safe mode, and run it. Im guessing you have something running that's hitting your hard drive, causing the defrag to start over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over.

Grab the defrag.exe file from a Windows ME machine and replace yours with it. It's MUCH faster than what comes with 98. Also check to see if you have other stuff running in the background. But running in safe mode like Muadib suggested should get you around this anyway.

Set it up on another partition if you can and run it on the smallest partition.
Your main drive will now cook when you defrag.
Do this in device manager.

Bozo:

Contrary to my normal habits; out of desperation and "naive" trust for Platinum Members ;p I downloaded the defrag from Goldenbow per your link. It seems to have done the trick and very fast I might add.

Obtaining the defrag from an ME OS wasn't an option for me. Setting it up on another partition is something that isn't complicated I'm sure, but still something I'm not sure how to do.

Thanks guys. I just hope this progy I downloaded doesn't come back to haunt me.

i'm sure booting in safe mode would have worked as well (and doubly checking for background apps)...however, I think it would leave DMA disabled, essentially causes slowe writes/reads from your hdd...but still faster than usual...

After 30 days, the software is designed to puke ugly green vomit out of your CDROM drawer - straight
into your face.

hehehe...

What can I say except I didn't choose to be paranoid. The world made me that way.

Oh on the subject of running Defrag in Dos... I tried that. I restarted in DOS mode and message was that Defrag only worked in Windows.

Thanks again,

They didn't mean run the defrag in DOS, they meant run it in Safe Mode - they are two different things. Safe mode is Windows but without any unnecessary device drivers loaded, its used for diagnostic tests and the like.

Not used 98 for a while, but from memory to get into safe mode, when you are booting up as soon as you see the message Starting Windows 98 quickly press the F8 key - you will be presented with a menu, simply select safe mode and you're away.

Glad you solved your problem, anyway.

Edit: Perhaps that should be the F5 key, I really cannot remember.
