Defragmentation and HyperV

hi,
so does anyone know what the consensus is on this - Is it a good idea to run an automatic defrag program that runs in the background on a hyperv Host machine that has VMs on it?

You should probably have your virtual disks preallocated and on their own dedicated filesystem so defragging the system drive shouldn't matter.

Which is aimed at the guest's filesystems so it's even more pointless than normal.

Marketing is not good material. However for certain purposes reading Data Sheets and technical explanations published by providers is a good starting point to understand the basic, and whether it is all baloney or at times might apply in some circumstance and not others.

And IMO virtually every doc put out by defrag software makers is marketing because their software is snakeoil.

I'm not a big defrag person. But one place it's advised is before creating a fixed-size VHD. No reason to have the new VHD file scattered all over the disk.

A) There's no reason to assume a new disk will be scattered across the lower level filesystem
B) Paging in a VM doesn't directly correlate to I/O on the host side. Hell, entropy on your side a highly fragmented disk file could work out better than a contiguous one.
