Defrag problems

I'm running a clean install WinME and I can't defrag without the system locking up on me after an hour or so when left unattended. I am running a p3 600e, abit be6v2, 128 pc-133 sdram and a Maxtor DiamondMax 40 gig ATA66. What will happen is that I leave it alone for an hour or so and when I come back, the IDE busy light will be permanently on and I can't get the video card to power up again. I am using the winME Highpoint 366 drivers included on the first WinME release.

This also happened once or twice when I left the system on overnight. The problems seemed to have been fixed when I reformated but now I can't defrag my 40 gig without me being at the computer.

I tried setting it to never shut down the monitor, never shut down the hard drives and to never go into standby. It still crashed.

I'd appreciate any insights or help you can offer.
