deFrag freeze up

My office mate's win95b defrager quit working. She has 3 partitions: c, d and e. The OS is on c. Until yesterday she was abel to defrag all 3 parts. Yesterday she installed Corel WordPerfect Suite 9. Now she can only defrag d and e. When she tries to defrag c it reports the % fragmented and pops up the screen with all the little colored boxes but doesn't begin to defrag - just sits there. When she tries to close it after 15 minutes of inactivity it says it isn't finished (doh!).

Anyone seen this? Have any ideas?

Only two, make sure nothing is running(program wise) in the background & run scandisk for possible errors.

She says no programs were running and she ran the thorough scan disk first. She does this every month evidently. I suggested she run scan disk again and then try defrag again, just to be sure. Results pending but not hopeful 😛

Well, rerunning scan and then defraging didn't work. Still refuses to run defrag on the c drive.

you could do two things, either run scan disk in safe mode and then do a defrag or you can hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and end task on everything except for explorer and systray. Then run scan disk and disk defragementer. Restart and the other porgrams will be loaded again. I hope this works for you.

I ran scandisk from Safe Mode and DOS on her machine. But defrag still balks:frown: It says there is a file, maybe ccrefm.exe or the like, that it can't find and this seems to be the beginning of the end. It never finishes defragging. It just bounces between the FAT and other files.

She recently installed the new WordPerfect suite9 and that may have something to do with it. Also, she used Add/Remove Programs to remove several apps including some Adobe and others that came with a scanner package. I think she also removed the older version of WP using the same method.
