Defrag before or after install

I was reading someone said to defrag before installing games, but wouldn't it be better to just defrag after installing?

What's the point of defragging before the install if the game will be fragmented anyway after the install?

Recommend wincontig. It defrags just a directory or file. Easy to use and quick since I can just defrag the game folders.
Free and doesn't install any services or schedulers, etc.

I install the game, select the folder and defrag just that.

Depends.
If the defrag program only defragments the files then there would be lots of areas that contain free space . When the install happens it will start with the first free sector and jump to the next till it finishes.

You would need to set the defrag program to defragment files and consolidate/defrag free space. Which takes longer to do.

it doesn't work that way, the drive will get fragmented when installing stuff no matter the condition of the drive beforehand, just try to install MS Office on a defagmentated drive, i guarantee you that you'll have to start all over again

Yes. This is why you want to Defrag before installing a large program.
