Definitive source for setting virtual memory?

I have heard a lot of differing opinions on how you should set your virtual memory in Windows.
Some say that you should set the min and max at the same number, while some say to leave it alone.
I have 512mb and am running XP. It is 'default' set to 712mb(initial) and 1536(max).
This is a change from previous Windows iterations in that they always used to automatically manage the Virtual memory.
It seems that 512mb should be just about enough for anything.
SO, is there a generally accepted rule of thumb with the Virtual memory?

Trying to find same info for WinME. 95 was twice to three times physical RAM. Searching.

1.5 times your RAM, at least in 2k is the default and recommended by MS. Now, is this optimal? Depends on what you use your machine for!

those default settings of your xp os seem to be good dont you think....earlier win9x defaults were much higher....i think unless your having a problem i would leave the default.
rc2 seems pretty fast in comparision to other win versions
