Definition of roomate?

When you see an ad in the paper and it is asking for a roomate do you assume that you will be sharing a bedroom or most likely have you own, or does roomate always imply sharing a room?

When I lived in a dorm I had to share a room...

When I lived in a house I had to share the house but not my room.

In both situations, I was able to figure out how roomate was formed.

I would never assume I had to share a room (unless it was listed as a 1br apt or something).

When you're sharing an appartment/room with a Kangaroo, that's a roomate.

yea pretty much. Usually if it's the share a room type of roommate, they specify in the ad. But it doesn't hurt to ask to be sure.

That is what I say. I had a roommate in college, lived in the same room as me. Now I have a housemate, lives in the same house, but different rooms.

what the hell is going on here, the only person I share a room with is a girlfriend I have never heard the term roomate used for something other than two people living together almost always in seperate rooms.

In a dorm you live in the same room as another person, hence roommate.

In a apt/house you live in the same living space but not the exact same room. I use roommate for this case as well but the OP apparantly thinks that sucks, so he created a horrible poll (where is the for either option?) and started this weak discussion.

every time I hear someone use the word flatmate, I've got to suppress an urge to throat punch them

but anyways... roommate = anyone you live with who's not your parents/grandparents or your significant other.

when I lived in the dorms, my roommate and I shared a physical room. when I moved off-campus (and in every apartment I've lived in since graduation), my roommates were people who lived in the same apartment but different rooms.

I couldn't imagine sharing a room with a non-SO after the age of like 18-19.

flatmate is someone who shares your apartment but has their own bedroom.

housemate if someone shares your house but has their own bedroom.
